11) Improved multi-star alignment for telescopes with digital setting circles. Add Barlows and Focal Reducers to your equipment list!

12) Improved 3D OpenGL renderings of the ISS, HST, Ceres, Vesta, Pluto, Charon, and many other solar system objects and spacecraft.

If you haven't used SkySafari Pro before, here's what you can do with it.

• Simulate the night sky up to 10,000 years in the past or future! Animate meteor showers, conjunctions, eclipses, and other celestial events with Time Flow.

• Search from our extensive database, and follow the arrow to objects in the sky. See spectacular views of Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, and other planets!

• Learn the history, mythology, and science of astronomy! Browse over 1500 object descriptions and astronomical images. Explore NASA space missions!

• Control your telescope! SkySafari 5 Pro adds wired or wireless control for Celestron, Meade, Orion, SkyWatcher, and many other telescopes. Point your GoTo or “Push-To” telescope anywhere in the sky! Requires SkyFi (sold separately).

This App Has THE Definition of “Universe” (EVERYTHING KNOWN!)

This is THE application for astronomy enthusiasts of ALL levels. Its only upper limit, as far as a novice like myself can tell, is the limit of our combined human knowledge. What we DON’T know is probably so unfathomable and profound, that even our smartest science brains wouldn’t have a clue. But, it is kind of fun, having at my immediate disposal, most of the known information about the Universe that we humans think we’ve found so far (even if most of it IS probably wrong in some way! ;-)

This is also one app that seems to actually use the graphic and compute capabilities of my laptop. Most things I commonly do, like Mail or web browsing, or even development work, probably don’t even come close to taxing my laptop's hardware. It’s nice to see those expensive i7 cores actually work hard at something! And, before you suggest it, I’m not really into video games (as my mind seems to have degenerated to the point where EVERY game is frustrating and I can’t even get past the first level (or whatever the modern equivalent is).

This is also one of those “rebuilding civilization from scratch” apps that I would want to have if I found myself in that position. ;-) This one app, and a handful of others, are on a small list, assuming I was only allowed to have a limited number of apps to bring forward with me, to help rebuild “civilization” (not that we’re all that civilized now anyway!)

Solid astronomy app & telescope control

After 5-6 outings using this app to control my 14” Orion Go-To Dob, I’m pretty satisified. The app’s Wifi connection with the scope has been reliable and control is straightfoward. I really like the ability to use SkySafari on my desktop iMac to research, build an observing list, and then export that list to the cloud and retrieve it from the Macbook that I use to actually operate the telescope in the field. I was on the fence about whether to get the Pro version or not, but the Galaxy View feature in the Pro version is a useful tool to visualize the scale of distances. In addition, the app comes with a decent library of information on each object that you can reference without having to connect to the internet.

Couple of minor annoyances:
1. The Help isn’t particularly helpful, at least in the sense that doesn’t have a comprehensive list of the shortkeys.
2. The Satellites functionality is kind of half-assed; it will give you an alert if a space station or Iridium is rising, which is neat, but there doesn’t seem to be a good way to identify, ahead of time, when satellites will be rising or what their track across the sky will be.

SkySafari 5 PRO

Great application. Very accurate. I’m not a professional astronomer but I read a lot of astronomy articles and go to this app to check out the stars and clusters mentioned in them. The renditions are so good it’s like I am looking through a giant telescope at them!! I have purchased other astronomy applications and this one is the best in my opinion. I can’t wait to see what Simulation Curriculum does with version 6. Also the satellite tracking for ISS and Iridium flares is exceptional. The program tracks the satellites accurately and even puts a glow on the track when the Iridium satellite flares. Other applications just show the satellite and leaves the user to guess when the flare will occur. Another great simulation feature of this program!!
