What's New in Version 1.3
Hello again, dear customer! In this update, we're excited to finally release a new feature which makes blocking annoying content on websites really easy. Right in 1Blocker Safari extension, you can now simply tap on any page element — like sidebar, site logo or subscription box — to hide it.
Customizing your favorite websites has never been easier.
Moreover, there are a few subtle improvements throughout the app which make the experience of using 1Blocker so much better. For example, you can now search rules not only by their name, but also by domains to which they are applied.
As always, we've also updated our preinstalled blocker ruleset and fixed many common issues with popular websites. Here are a few examples:
- Links on Macworld can now be accessed as normal.
- Comments on Trello and Airbnb are no longer blocked.
- Email subscription links open correctly in Safari.
Important: please launch the app to apply new preinstalled rules.

Capable, but not quite there
I had hoped that this extension might give me equivalent functionality as I have with Firefox and NoScript. In many ways this product is more capable, but it lacks a critical capability that NoScript provides with ease: a clear view of what external resources are referenced, and what is allowed or blocked. There is a “website inspector” which is predominantly useless. Sure, it’ll tell you the number of things it identifies with the default rules, but it never tells you precisely what was identified.
End sum, while I had high hopes for this product, it fails for anyone wishing to operate from a principle of least privilege. Which is a shame, because the rule capabilities in custom packages look to be quite powerful. It’s just too tedious to craft those rules since it provides no insight on its own internal decisions on a per-page basis.
Contacting the authors for support is also only through twitter, which is unfortunate for those of us who don’t participate in social media.
Top class blocker
Not all “blockers” are created equal…and there’s virtually no guarantee that a product will work. I’ve had a chance to see how iBlocker works on iOS, and I was instantly sold; the performance difference alone was quantifiable and convincing.
The speed differences on MacOS are subtler, since the Mac already does a good job filtering traffic that could harm your computer. Since iBlociker is seriously configurable, you can see how many filters are built in to stop third party traffic. But the difference is clear on start-up alone. Without 1Blocker, there was an obvious slowdown on my already fast machine; with 1Blocker, the slowdown was gone. It’s really doing its job.
The real clincher was the ability to configure. If you want to block a single site, or a class of sites, you can do it.
Still not as good as the (“free” but shady) alternatives
I like the idea of paying for an ad blocker rather than having companies stack its deck. So 1Blocker always seemed like an attractive option. However, I've been using it off-and-on for a year and I've found it to be a very frustrating experience:
- I get the same "user error" constantly while editing rules. All I found online are people complaining about this since last year.
- It simply doesn't block some ads for some reason. I'm not sure what competitors like uOrigins do that 1Blocker doesn't but the latter is much less consistent for some reason. It doesn't even block all the ads on the test-your-ad-blocker websites (the competitors do).
- The "hide elements" feature doesn't work on most elements I've tried.
- There's no keyboard shortcut key to delete rules. There's also no way to bulk delete. Right clicking on every rule is tedious. There's no way to start "fresh," as far as I can tell. A "default" button would be nice.
All in all, I've found that this ad blocker is much higher maintenance than all the others but without the benefits of better ad blocking. So unfortunately I keep going back to the more venal competition.
