Archaeological ruins and ancient texts show that handshaking – also known as dexiosis – was practiced in ancient Greece as far back as the 5th century BC.
It then globally spread as brief greeting or parting tradition in which two people grasp one of each other's like hands, in most cases accompanied by a brief up-and-down movement of the grasped hands. It nearly took 2300 years for people to experiment with other shakes, notably the Milk one.
By the "early 1900s people were asking for the new treat, often with ice cream." By 1930s, milkshakes were a popular drink at malt shops, which were the "typical soda fountain of the period ... used by students as a meeting place or hangout."
From there the Shake movement picked up quickly with the rise of public figures the likes of Shakylle O'Neal and Shakira.
Game developpers picked up on the trend when Vlambeer's Jan Willem Nijman made his calssic "The Art of Screenshake" presentation (you should check it out, it's amazing), Harlem Shake shook the internet and you can now shake your phone while using Travelbees.
