***“It’s a goofy theme with fun art and high replayability, but beneath that veneer of casual play is a great middle weight card game that lives on the line between hardcore gamer and casual enjoyment.” —Jonathan Bolding “The Escapist”
***“Smash Up is smashing good fun, especially among gamers who can relax, revel in the sheer audacity of some stupid-good plays, and aren’t ashamed to let loose and let their geek flags fly.” —Dice Hate Me
Smash Up is an award-winning shufflebuilding card game designed by Paul Peterson, now available in a beautiful digital adaptation so you can play on the go with friends all over the world. In Smash Up, players draft two faction decks from their choice of pirates, ninjas, robots, zombies, and more, and combine them to create a hybrid team that is a force to be reckoned with!
A SPECIAL GAME EXPERIENCE!
The ""shufflebuilding"" game Smash Up starts with a simple premise: Take the twenty-card decks of two factions, shuffle them into a forty-card deck, then compete to smash more Bases than your opponents! Each faction brings a different game mechanism into play – pirates move cards, zombies bring cards back from the discard pile, dinosaurs have huge power – and every combination of factions brings a different play experience.
During play, Base cards (each with their own difficulties and abilities) are in play. Combine wisely your characters and actions' cards to obtain the most power! You attempt to have the most power on the Base from your minions when the Base is smashed. Sounds easy?
How easy is it when an opponent's Alien-Ninja decides to Beam Up your minions to other Bases - flat out Assassinate them? What about when the Pirate-Dinosaur player Full Sails in and releases King Rex to stomp your minions into the ground, or when the Wizard-Zombies use their Mystic Power to create an Outbreak, suddenly flooding minions onto the Base from the discard pile? Or what if you faced a Zombie-Dinosaur player instead and he created an Outbreak of massive beasts all at once?!?
SCORE THE 15 NECESSARY POINTS & WIN THE GAME!
When a Base is smashed, each player in first, second and third place scores points. Fourth place? Sorry, bro – try harder next time.
With nine different factions, Smash Up includes dozens of combinations to try. Pirate-Aliens play different than Ninja-Aliens, for instance. Which will you use to smash up your opponents?
And did we mention the dinosaurs have laser beams?

Ratings and Reviews
Very good still a couple of things that need to be tweaked
I’d been holding off on getting this since past reviews made it clear that the UI needed work. From the looks of it a lot of the issues that were complained about have been improved, so kudos to the developers. If there is anything I’d complain about it’s that some of the buttons are very difficult to click. (For instance the proceed button) in addition it would be nice if scanning and choosing actions would filter out cards that it doesn’t apply to. For instance the wizard deck has a card that allows the player to scan their deck for an action card and add it to their hand. There is no reason to include the minion cards in the selection.
Also would be nice if there were an ability to look through the different faction decks outside of gameplay in order to better learn about their contents and develop strategies.
Promising but Riddled w Bugs
This app has the potential to better than the (analog) card game, because of the digital tallying of base points. However, the app freezes often — I’d estimate 20% of all my games played involve a freeze, sometimes recoverable with a quick restart, sometimes not. It reminds me of some of the Magic the Gathering apps, which were/are tremendously buggy. In the cases of both Smash Up and Magic, it’s odd that such established franchises would release half-baked products. 3-Star apps that could easily become 5-star, if developers got their acts together and fixed performance issues.
Also, this game has just 8 factions, which is a small portion of those available, so I hope that in the future — after they fix their performance issues — they will introduce expansions.
Stick to the cards....
The UI isn't much of an issue, yeah, there are ways to tweak it to enhance gameplay like zooming in on your hand so you can see all your cards without scrolling through them. But again, little things. Biggest problems? Can't access the online multiplayer. Probably a case of severs being shut down. If there's only local play, why is the app $4? Not very justifiable. Second, where are the expansions? The table-game version is up to like 9 expansions or so, nothing for this yet? Again, $4? Finally, the AI opponents seem to be a bit unfair. Very little destruction against one another, but god forbid I try to play a card. Very coincidental how they always seem to have the right cards at the right time. A challenge is good, but if I play on easy, it shouldn't be the same outcome as hard.....
