I find more often than not real learning breakthroughs happen when observing language in context. Hopefully this app will help you to take the knowledge you are acquiring in class or through standard learning materials, and apply it to read real texts.

Something special

ry51600

I don’t take the time to write reviews often. I usually don’t find it useful, since personally I barely look at the reviews before I download an app.

I’m gonna take a minute and write a review for TangoRisto though. This app made the single difference between me passing and failing the JLPT last year. Could have I just pulled up all the individual sites it pulls articles from? Sure. I would have also had to annotate the vocabulary with my own Furigana, gather it all on my own for loading it into SRS, and figure out whether or not I’m even RESPONSIBLE for the vocab at my current level or not.

Or I could just download the app. Do I have some things I’d like to add? Of course. The ability to use J-J Dictionary would be great for those of us at higher levels of the JLPT. I’d also like something in app to cross reference for grammar. But, given what’s already here? TangoRisto is an amazing app, and is something you can’t pass up if you’re studying Japanese.

One of the best apps available for advanced Japanese learners

I’ve been studying Japanese for about 8 years and can speak it pretty fluently, but I never get enough reading practice because it’s so annoying to have to look up vocabulary, add them to a study list, and just enjoy reading the content of articles. This app helps me with all three problems!

Love that it also color codes words by jlpt level so that I know which words to focus on studying if I want to pass the jlpt n1.

Also love that it recently added other sections of nhk news, such as science and society. Now I can read topics I’m interested in while improving my Japanese.

Awesome! I'm glad its being useful. Hopefully I'll be able to improve it more and more over time.

Great App for Reading Practice

S.Baleno

This is a great, simple, easy-to-use app that is geared for those who already have a basic grasp of Japanese grammar and some kanji already under their belt. It has a lot of features baked into it that makes it a multipurpose tool for those at the intermediate level trying to improve their reading comprehension.

The only thing I would like to see added is integration with the WaniKani API. If it had that, I would absolutely recommend it to my students and everyone else studying Japanese. Absolutely worth the $4.99 option to support this soon-to-be essential learning tool.

Developer Response

Hi! Thank you for your review and feedback. Other users have mentioned the WaniKani API too, it is definitely something I need to look into. I'm now planning the work for the next three months. Although my main focus will be on improving the quality of the analysis results (reduce errors in the reading/dictionary hints), I will include some surveying work on the possibility of a Wanikani integration. Thank you!!
