Could be better
First off I want to say that I HATE these controls. Anything gyro related is extremely annoying not because the concept is even really bad but on say a device like an iphone you face glares vision loss and many other problems with a control that isn't even really a control. Add the fact of that and no addition control options makes this charming and cute game really hurt in the fun department. This game wouldn't be bad at all if I could "virtually" tilt the screen if all else not literally and lost battles because I couldn't even see clearly or properly It's just not fun. The gyro was intended to make you move with the screen however this game it's not really that easy to do that. I don't really have any complaints about anything else except the control scheme is just terrible. I don't mind miss if targets I don't mind sliding all over the place it's funny but when I want to play and the environment around me doesn't agree it because a bundled mess and a waste of time. PLEASE implement some new controls or something! I enjoy this game and don't want to just toss it aside because of negligence!
I can't believe I waited so late in picking this one up. This is a fantastically fresh take on strategy RPGs. It may have a simple presentation, but the strategy and skill needed is extremely deep. Square did a wonderful job in presenting something exactly how Apple would - simple, easy, with great depth and sophistication hidden away where you may not even realize is there.
Tip: take your time and choose your units widely after referencing the Monsterpedia. Even with that, it'll take gentle hands, a keen eye, patience and planning.
I don't know about total game length, but I'd live to see Square do more with this franchise, keep it going with new lands, new villains, etc. For me, I'm enjoying Sliding Heroes more than Vanguard, though that game is great in it's own way. Also, I've adjusted my tilt sennsitivity (increased) and I don't have any problems looking over my iPod touch. If you increase the sensitivity and tilt more gently, you'll find the entire game stays well enough in full view. If you're patient and plan things out, you can keep troops together or even seperate units, etc.
This is a great game and should be a welcomed addition to any SRPG fan's collection!
Too hard to control
Rpg+poker= awesome! Rpg+labyrinth? Not so much.
It is way too difficult to get your guys facing the right way. Even if I have the enemy surrounded with 4 guys, there is no way to get them all facing towards the enemy to hit! At most, 1 or 2 will hit, while the others just get stabbed in the back.
There should be a way to group guys together and have them move as one group. Now, it is just random. I move my guys hoping that my fighters go to the front and mages go to the back. Or, even worse, I use 1 mage to kill all the birds, sacrfice the Mage, recruit fighters to clean up the rest. I shouldn't have to sacrifice men!
One reviewer below said there is strategy to this game. There is no strategy here, just lots of flipping your guys around to get behind enemies. Maybe you could call that skill.
Finally, Endless mode is way too easy, until Level 18. Level 18 suddenly becomes insanely difficult. There is no scaling up the difficulty between level 17 and 18. You have to do too many complicated maneuvers in a row, exactly right each time, or you immediately lose a life. And, you lose all progress on the level when u lose a life.
Overall, a very frustrating game that initially looked very good. Too little strategy/rpg elements, too much random sliding hoping that you hit something.
