A great Hack and Slash iPad game

I went looking for a traditional hack and slash RPG on the iPad and found Underworlds. It's a very good experience and a lot of fun on the iPad. It feels very similar to older games such as Wizardry, Might and Magic, and Realmz and has consumed a lot of enjoyable time for me.

That said, it's not perfect. The magic items are so complex that determining if the new item is better than your old one is very difficult and this is complicated by being able to carry very few items. Sometimes when you have your inventory up, you get attacked by monsters and killed before you even know you are under attack. The game could use better instructions (or any instructions) and a good online strategy guide which would reduce the need for support by the authors. It took most of a play through before I realized the teleport charms were designed to let you teleport back to the merchant to sell your stuff. And it took me almost that long to realize that the goblet icon gave you a description of your current goals.

That said, this is my favorite game on the iPad and the one I go back to time after time.

Almost great...

Let me start off by saying that I am a tough customer to please, but not unreasonable. This is a mediocre to passable Diablo clone minus the polish we've come to expect with this generation of gaming. That being said however, I am thoroughly disappointed by the primitive "native pixel doubling" that that the deva have used to sell this as an iPad native game. It's fun but ugly on the iPad, and desperately needs an update with actually scaled textures, not stretched ones. If the dev would be so kind as to come out of hiding with an update, I'd be glad to change my rating. All in all, the quests are solid but just like the lore, suffer from a lack of originality. I play this game a lot due to the fun and looting involved, and even though it's a doable clone, it is one of the better clones available. It seems to be a trend with idevice gaming to release a game, patch it once or twice then abandon it even though it still generates revenue... A sad trend for a capable platform.

Dungeon Crawler

The following is a Diablo type dungeon crawler. The storyline is interesting enough to play. On easy, it was easy enough that I could run through without too much thought.

The only problem is the very poor graphics. I am not looking for much, but the graphics are very pixelated and difficult to cope with. On the iPod touch, it might be ok, but seeing as it was stretched out for the iPad, it was a little too much to comfortably use. A lot of the environment is also very dark and hard to see in.

I got it for free app of the day, but I would say it is worth 1-2 dollars, I wouldn't pay more than that though. It is like a cut down refresher of playing the original diablo, graphics and all. So it deserves at least a three, put the pixilation and dark screen cannot allow a larger score than that.
