Shredder, the most successful chess program ever, is now also available for the iPad. You can play against Shredder, analyze with him and solve chess puzzles. It offers the usual Shredder standard on your iPad.
In addition to the outstanding playing strength of the 12 times computer chess world champion, Shredder is also able to mimic the play of a human chess player with any playing strength. He even deliberately makes typical human mistakes in those levels.
Solve 1000 built in chess puzzles. Shredder keeps track of your performance and offers advice if needed.
You can adjust Shredder’s playing strength from beginner to master level. If you like, Shredder automatically adjusts his strength to yours. He even calculates an Elo rating for you. This is how the playing strength of chess players is typically measured.
During the game a coach is watching your moves and warns you if you are about to make a mistake.
See how you are getting better and better the more games you play and the more chess puzzles you solve.

Great app, minor quibbles
I really like this app. As others have pointed out, when set a modest, club-level settings, the play has a human-like behavior, not just hanging a big piece. This makes this game one that I always come back to. Also, unlike many other apps, this has a nice semi-minimalist UI, without the clutter you see in some other apps. And quality of play is very good at the highest levels, certainly good enough for the average club player. I've heard it suggested that Hiarcs iPad app is stronger than this (on desktop they're comparable), but this is plenty strong enough for me and I really don't like the Hiarcs UI.
I have minor quibbles, though. The "save" interface would be more powerful if it had an option for iCloud or other ways to export the results that I could use outside of Shredder. Also, the output is using a "long algebraic format" (e.g. "Nc1-d3") and it would be nice if they used a more natural "standard algebraic format" (e.g. "Nd3", unless you needed to disambiguate it from another knight move to d3). Also very strange, castling is recorded as "0-0" (with the number zero) rather than "O-O" (upper case letter "oh"). And it would be nice if it included PGN headers (so you can tell which was the player and which was Shredder).
But with those beefs aside, a great app. I've yet to find another chess program that I like more than this one, and I've been looking!
Still a Favorite
I have several chess apps on my iPad. I find that I gravitate toward two of them, coming back to play against Shredder all the time. Yes, the engine is dated, but I find that it plays a very "human" version of chess. Instead of chess engines that make stupid mistakes at lower levels, Shredder's lower levels make tactical mistakes to find and exploit.
I also like the way Shredder tracks my ELO and can adjust playing strength to give me a run for my money. ELO ratings seem a bit inflated, but it's more fun for me to play at or above my ability.
All I all, it's worth the few dollars.
My Favorite Chess app for the iPad
This is my favorite Chess app for the iPad, but there is room for improvement; read on...
1) It's easy to use
2) It has a chess coach and analysis
3) It has a strength bar indicating who has the advantage and how strong that advantage is.
4) It has puzzles
1) The UI could use a little attention
A) It's starting to feel dated
B) Some of the images are fuzzy, not retina or not pixel aligned
C) The menu button is confusing as its really a Back button on a navigation controller.
D) There is no warning when doing something that will make the game unratable.
The $10 off coupon is nice but on the Mac I prefer the Hiarcs chess app as it has more features, is stronger and they seem to treat upgrades to a new version more fairly.
