Talkonaut is a free Jabber (XMPP) client for your iPhone or iPod with free peer-to-peer voice calling over Jingle Audio extension compatible with GoogleTalk™. Talkonaut can be used with any standard Jabber account like Gmail, Gizmo5™, or from your corporate Jabber server. If you do not have a Jabber account yet, you can register one right from the Talkonaut. Talkonaut supports a number of XMPP extensions including multi-user conference chat (XEP-0045), file and image sharing (XEP-0047, XEP-0065), vCard based avatars (XEP-0153) and many others.

You can also use Talkonaut to make cheap voice calls to landline or mobile phone numbers through GTalk2VoIP infrastructure. If you have a SIP account, you can use it with Talkonaut to make calls over SIP. SIP compatibility has been successfully tested with Gizmo5™, SIPNET™ and with a number of other providers. Users of Betamax's SIP accounts may experience some issues.

Calling functionality is available on iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS and 2nd generation iPod touch. All voice calling features on iPod touch require a compatible headset with a microphone.

Push notification is not currently supported.

The changes ruin the program!

I've loved Talkanaut. It's been a wonderful client for jabber based chats, including the national weather service, which is what I use it for. However, the latest update set the program back several notches. The new version puts all the chat in bubbles (yuck) which makes it hard to read. Plus, HTML links are now gone! I used to be able to click on a link in a chat and see the page. I NEED that ability. Please bring back the previous style and format!!!

It is the only app I have found that can connect to my Jabber ID. I like it, but notifications don’t work. I have to open the app to see new notifications. That is unfortunate. Please fix! Would rate higher if notifications worked as intended.

Best MUC client on the iPhone

This is by far the most feature rich Jabber MUC client on the iPhone. I've tested pretty much all of them this is the only one to support almost all the Jabber XEP-0045 protocol specifications. If you run your own Jabber server then this app will give you room configuration, user lists, member permissions, permission based status icons etc. It works great with Openfire, especially the XMPP Service Discovery option. You can even perform discovery on a different server than the one you are connected to, great if you use GTalk logins for accessing Openfire rooms for example.

Voice calling worked as advertised, and yes it does use the third party SIP Gateway service that other reviewers mentioned. I haven't see anything nefarious in it's use so far, although I can understand the surprise at seeing the service appear without warning in your roster.

Video calling didn't work for me. Video from the phone was visible on the computer but nothing was visible on the phone. I imagine this will get fixed in a future update but I would not use this app if that is your key requirement.

All told this is a great app and you can't argue with the price. I would however like to see a paid version that allows for the removal of the SIP Gateway and Dialer options since those are extraneous to everyday use for me anyway. I'd like to support the developers without the use of third party gateway services if possible.
