What's New in Version 1.1
Major Minor Release! It's not much, but it's a start!
Of course, having released the first version, we decided to put in AAALLL the things we cut out to make the release for the next version. Well, making everything perfect turned out to take a long time. So in order to get some action happening, I decided to package all the core fixes and minor UI updates we've done and release it as an update.
* Updated chess engine with improved difficulty scaling and much, much improved play book! Now, the AI actually varies the opening.
* Handling rotation like a champ! No more silly flipping, the game now rotates when the pad rotates, just as you'd expect.
* Fixes save/load issues that could corrupt games.
* Various other fixes and tweaks to improve performance and stability.
The program is simple and strikes me as intuitive. Its four levels and three time controls offer minimal but perhaps adequate choices. At the intermediate level, it plays as a beginner with two or three move opening knowledge, but is able to exploit egregious tactical blunders.
The program does not offer true rotation, but only landscape mode (it does flip). It lacks the ability to save or email games. The distinctive graphics do not appeal to me. Showing legal squares when a move is initiated is a nice feature for beginners, but as a strong club player, I would like to be able to turn off this distraction.
The music did not play, although normally I would turn such a feature off after testing.
At expert level it gives me a challenge, and misses few tactics. Positionally, it seems relatively weak.
No new game button.
When a game ends in checkmate, you get a menu: reverse colors, same game, or menu, which is simple and convenient, but I found no way to invoke this in the middle of the game.
Levels are fine: I had no trouble beating it on expert, but it does keep you on your toes. Intermediate does seem too weak.
