Not as good as actual board game
It doesnt let you set up the pieces where u want them, instead it gives you a random layout. Also the controls are difficult, it took me forever to get a piece to move forward which is pretty weak for such a simple game
This has been one of my "big three" favorite board games ever since I was a kid (right up there with Chess and Risk), and I was so excited to see it in the app store - but the poor reviews kept me away.
I finally decided to just go for it - and i'm glad I did! Most of the objections from the negative reviewers can be fixed by simply changing a setting in the options: Do the numbers seem backwards to you? Change the numbering from US to EU (or none).
I do have one small issue, however, although you are able to rearrange the pieces on a predetermined board (of which there are many to choose from), I would still like to be able to set-up the board entirely from scratch. Now, this isn't a problem since YOU STILL HAVE CONTROL OVER THE POSITION OF YOUR PIECES - but part of the charm of the original is setting-up the board from scratch!
Did you know there is a newer version of Stratego that has futuristic artwork, and an new piece with a special function (like the spy)? It would be really cool to have that as an option in THIS game!
Miner gripes aside, this is a great game, and being able to play Stratego anywhere is a wonderful aspect that shouldn't be overlooked. Thanks for the hard work that was clearly put into creating this. I can't wait for what future updates might hold!
Pretty good, could be improved
Overall, I'm satisfied. A couple of improvements could be made.
1. Varied AI. In battle mode, the enemy AI pretty much uses the same strategy. Would like to see varied difficulty, ie Easy, Medium, Hard, Master.
2. When two pieces meet, show the number as well as the picture, it takes a while to memorize the pictures and I don't want to wait for the animation to be over to see what rank they were.
3. Be able to move pieces around in Campaign Mode before the battle starts. Unless this is part of the "challenge", I often hate the default layout for campaign mode battles, particularly against Napoleon.
