I'm not sure why everyone else seems to be having crashing problems. I've played it extensively on my iPad2 with iOS 4.3.5 and have not had a single crash. I've even paused mid-game, switched apps, and done all the usual stuff that apps sometimes have a hard time with.
Anyway... the game is a lot of fun and really pulls you in like a good book. I have a hard time putting it down and walking away. This wasn't something that was just slapped together to make a buck. The developers clearly put a lot into this. The graphics, while not exactly eye-melting, are smooth and refined and are certainly good enough to offer a rich gaming experience. The gameplay is solidly conceived and the touch interface is fantastic and responsive. My only beef, is that during certain dialogs you'll be presented with options... such as what city to raid, but you can't go to a map and research anything. You have to make a decision off of your memory. That's my only problem.
The bottom line is, if you don't want a game that's going to make you forget to go to bed, then don't download this. Otherwise, it's definitely worth the money.
Crashes Only when Memory is Low
I have read about all these crashes. I don't think this is necessarily a problem with the game itself. Without a doubt there is an occaisional crash, but there are solutions. You can double click your button below the ipad screen and see all your running apps. Hold down on one of those apps and they start shimmering and a red x appears. Start hitting the "x" for each app on the bottom there. That closes those apps and frees up memory for the game. If that does not work, then hold your power button and do a complete power down where you actually slide the power off slider (and not where you just put the ipad in standby mode).
Almost every time that solves the problem for me. In fact, before I even start this or many other games, I shut down everything I can. Performance is usually much better. Songive it a try if you are crashing and maybe you will see that the game works well.
A little reminder from the publisher to do this when the game starts would, of course, help.
Amazing port of an amazing game
I loved playing Pirates on my original Xbox quite a few years ago. I was so excited when i saw this come up on the ipad today!
It is almost exactly the same as the Xbox version I know and love. The only difference I've noticed is that taking over a city is no longer done through an invasion in the form of a strategy game, but rather a bombardment minigame on your boat. I do like this new method but i do prefer the old way and wish it had come back.
The controls work very well which i was worried about after losing all of the buttons the game's previous platforms had at for it to use. Luckily they did a great job moving the controls to a touchscreen interface.
The only real problem with the game is the steep learning curve. I haven't played it in a few years and that is already making it a bit difficult to remember what everything does. While the game has a comprehensive guide within it which covers all of the terms you will run across during your game, you can't check it when you have to make a decision. I would definitely look over some things in the guide early on so you know what to choose when you hsve to make any decisions.
For the $3.99 this game costs you get hours of gameplay and strong replayability. You have so many options when playing that you just can't do it all in one game. You can go all out offensively, trade and gather wealth, search for hidden areas, and more. You won't get bored playing this game.
