What's New in Version 2.6.0
This update adds support for 3D Touch! Use 3D touch to activate a stored power-up. Just press firmly when you have one to use it. With 3D Touch you can play completely with one hand!
Of course, the old way to activate a stored power-up is still available: Just touch the screen with a second finger.
We also want to let you know that Phoenix HD is available for the new Apple TV! This version also has a very cool co-op mode which we highly recommend. All ships purchased in Phoenix HD are available to you on Apple TV at no additional charge (and vice-versa).
Finally, we upgraded our Flare engine to the latest version and improved some effects.
Excellent SHMUP bullet hell - best mechanics I've found so far on iOS.
This game is literally my favorite bullet hell shooter I've found so far in the App Store. I say that because the gameplay mechanics are rock solid and the controls are tight - 3D Touch to activate your power up is so intuitive and a perfect fit for playing with one hand. The weapons and weapon upgrades are awesome and the enemies and bullet patterns are challenging. Localized leaderboards is a great idea and keeps me wanting to play everywhere I go. The only downside is the only way to unlock new ships is to pay, which is ridiculous - at least let players buy ships with coins, I don't care if it's a 1,000,000 coins per ship, just having the option to use in-game currency to buy ships will give the game tons of replayability and not lock out people who don't want to spend real money.
The pay-to-unlock model makes this game four star at best. The UI design is also pretty lackluster, especially for a game that has great in-game visuals and such solid gameplay. Otherwise, highly recommended for the gameplay alone.
Fantastic game, subpar business model
I've had this game on my ipod for years. It's addictive, fun in short bursts, flashy, controls well, and is a wonderful score chaser. However, as good as the game is, it has one glaring issue that should be addressed to keep the game fresh. That issue is the in-app purchases. Your basic ship is free, but each of the other 7 ships costs $1 to unlock. Not too long ago, a store was added to the app that added a new wrinkle to the formula: coins drop as you destroy enemy ships, and you use those coins for buffs on your next run. None of the ships are unlockable with these coins. Why? I say this as an open letter to the devs: you can keep the in-app purchases in place for those who wants the ships and coins faster, but why not let the rest of us play to earn those ships? It would give us goals and a reason to pour more time into this wonderful game. You can even keep the timed demos to try out ships before we unlock them. Just let us earn them with our skills instead of our wallets.
Still my favorite phone game ever.
I've been hooked on this game since the first time I ever played it. It's everything I want out of a video game: visually stunning, great game mechanics, and yet very simplistic and entertaining. No need to buy the extra ships, unless you wanna show your support like I did. Once you save up enough coins to buy the powerups the starter ship is more than capable of handling all the high score action. Tip: you can control your ship from any part of the screen to give you a better look of your surroundings. Also try to hold on to the health power ups as long as possible so they will only activate when you run out of juice. Try keeping the ship in the middle of the screen to give you leeway on all directions. Suggestion to developers: work out a multiplayer, co-op perhaps?
