What's New in Version 1.1
Optimization for iPad 1 and bug fixes
By far one of the best Sonic games ever made!
It plays like the original Sonic game but with the design focused on Sonic's ease of speeding through levels that were so characteristic of Sonic 2... In fact, I'd say even to the next degree! That makes this game one of the best to play of all the side scrolling Sonic games! Super fun!! [FOR A CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM, SEE BELOW].
I love the variety of ways that Sonic can go fast, get thrown around, and interact with the environment to the effect of going faster and getting thrown around more... Obviously this game was very well through.
Though I gave it five stars, I do have two major pieces of criticism, (I hope the developers take the time to read this...) One: the thumb controls are a little hard to use. Their sensing range is too small for my hands, especially the jump button. The tilting controls don't seem to work well either because you have to turn your head too if you want to see the screen upright... it has the effect of something akin to eating a taco.
Also a little disappointed there are only four levels, rather than the standard six. If you're going to make a game this good, why not go full out? It also makes it disproportionate to the time it takes to complete the special stages, which are the standard number, and are quite challenging.
One more point of criticism: the third battle against Robotnik (I refuse to call him "Eggman") is disproportionately hard compared to the others. A slight oversight?
Repeat of the Wii
The game is great. So when I saw Episode II available on the Itunes store. I bought it. Turns out Episode II doesn't work on Ipad Minis. (I've already posted a review on Episode II about this.) And Episode I doesn't work on iPod Touches. Sega make the same mistake they did with the Wii, which is: If you release Episode 1 on a certain platform, you have to release Episode II on the same platform. Otherwise, it cheats the fans out of Episode Metal, and it becomes such a hassle for the fans because they either miss out on half the game, or have to rebuy the half they already own.
I would be fine if both episodes only worked on the iPad (mini), or only worked on the iPod Touch, but one only working on one, and the other only working the other is not acceptable. Ever. The game, however, is so good that it warrants a better rating that 1 Star.
(Side Note: It is a bit annoying to rest the cord of headphones plugged into the headphone jack in between your pinkie and ring finger, but it's relatively minor.)
No screen flipping??? Huh???
Why in the world didn't they make this game support screen flipping? My left hand is right near the headphones port of my iPad and my headphones jack gets in the way of my hand. Can't I just change the screen orientation to the other side??? That's really annoying.
And the bonus stages suffer the most. Rubbing my finger across the screen is not a good way. It does move fast at all. I have to wildly swipe like ten times just to get all the way around one turn. Here's what there should be. Listen up: a right arrow button on the right side of the screen, and a left arrow on the left side of the screen. You hold your finger down on the right arrow, and the screen rotates in that direction until you lift up your finger, and vice versa. Simple! That's how you control the direction of your car steering in Asphalt Urban GT 4 for iPhone. Go play that game to see what I mean and implement those controls.
Also, this game runs choppy on my iPad 3. Why can't this run as smooth as on the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions?
