Call of Cthulhu: The Wasted Land is a turn-based strategy/role-playing game based on the award winning Call of Cthulhu RPG. Set in the midst of World War One, the game pits your team of investigators and soldiers against an ancient enemy, one older than humanity itself... Can your team of investigators keep their grip on sanity long enough to stop these diabolical plans? The fate of humanity is in your hands...
Developed in conjunction with Chaosium and based their multi-award winning Call of Cthulhu RPG.
"The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown." H.P.Lovecraft
The game features:
- Full 3D graphics with high quality textures, images and effects to bring the action alive.
- All visuals are enhanced for retina and iPad displays.
- Select from a range of authentic period weapons, equipment, armour, skills and more.
- Build your team up to match your gaming style; will you shred your foes with massed rifle fire or blast them with powerful spells gleaned from forbidden tomes? It's your choice!
- Integrates to Game Centre and Open Feint with challenging achievements to unlock.
Call of Cthulhu was originally the title of a novella by cult American horror writer H.P. Lovecraft (1890–1937) which has, since it was published in 1928, captured the imagination of generation after generation of fans. Returning to the horror from Lovecraft's original 'Reanimator' set during the dark days of WW1, Call of Cthulhu: The Wasted Land draws the player into a nightmare world where the terror of mustard gas and trench warfare are but a foretaste of what is to follow.
In the free version, the first mission (titled ‘The Battle of Pudding Lane’) and the training mission are free. From there players can continue onwards paying per level. However from this point onwards, if you are enjoying the game it is more cost-effective to buy the full game (though you'll have to start again, search the App Store for 'Call of Cthulhu: The Wasted Land'). In both versions of the game, new DLC levels can be purchased too (click on the 'Extra Missions' button!)
This game has potential but as it is now I cannot justify buying the full game. Interface is clunky and aggravating. For me, if I could zoom out, it would help a lot because I don't like to have to slide the screen all the time. For instance one character have enough action points to shoot twice per round but I have to slide the screen to find my target then after shooting the game scrolls me back to my character then I have to slide again. Annoying. Also I noticed grammar mistakes which is a turn off. If they can't bother to properly proofread their text, they are probably sloppy in other areas as well. Also the last time this was updated was back in 2012 which is a red flag for me and a sign this app has been abandoned by developers who have no intention of improving it.
Unplayable yet fantastic game
This game has wonderful graphics, haunting audio and atmosphere...I love it which makes me even more bitter that the game is incredibly unplayable due to poor UI design. The buttons are so cumbersome. If you try to end turn one of your units wonders off into the field, if you do not press correctly on an enemy you deselect your active unit, etc etc. I understand that there is only so much room for buttons and not selecting the correct button is partly the user's (my) fault but at the same time it is very very frustrating. If you are able to get around the clumsy interface this game is incredible. For me the time spent playing the game primarily entailed me trying to violently stab my phone with my index finger 😢
Only Basic Training?
I thought we'd be able to do at least one mission, but unless I'm just missing it, that doesn't appear to be the case.
So, it IS free, but don't count on doing any missions without spending money.
That said, I'm a fan of HPL and TBS, so I'm inclined to go ahead and try the full version. Basic training gives you a tiny taste of what might be available in the full game.
