Karateka will charm you with its classic love story set in feudal Japan. Fight to save the lovely Mariko from the evil warlord Akuma and reunite her with her True Love!
"For those who remember the original, the new Karateka must not be missed. And to those with no prior knowledge: you have an excellent, new experience in store." -Touch Arcade (4.5 stars)
"With a stunning makeover and simplistic but compelling action, this terrific update brings Karateka into the 21st century in style." -Cnet
From PRINCE OF PERSIA creator Jordan Mechner, the original side-scrolling karate classic comes to new life on iPad and iPhone with art by Jeff Matsuda (The Batman) and music by Grammy-winning composer Christopher Tin (Civilization IV).
Easy to grasp yet challenging to master, the rhythm-based karate combat tells a simple human story. Three suitors vie to save Mariko: A fearsome Brute, a noble Monk, and her brave True Love.
"A brilliant life system that delivers variety in the gameplay as well as incredible replay value; you won't want to stop playing until you rescue Mariko as her True Love and see the storybook ending." - Touch Arcade
PUNCH THE HAWK!
"Fun for those of us who played the original on an Apple II, Commodore 64, or even an NES, but younger gamers will still appreciate the unique style and easy-to-learn gameplay." -ArsTechnica
"Karateka is widely considered to be one of the greatest 8-bit home computer games ever created. It wasn't a game so much as a living story that you, the player, were a part of... The new Karateka legitimately feels like it might be what Mechner's original idea would have been, if then were now." - Touch Arcade
*IMPORTANT* Karateka requires iPhone 4S or newer, iPad 2 or newer, or iPod Touch (5th generation). Karateka does NOT support earlier devices such as iPad 1, iPhone 4, and iPhone 3GS.

You will be forced to watch the backstory every time you start the game (you're rescuing the princess, duh, and she is in THIS castle, surprisingly enough). Designers do not mind interrupting game play with needless cut aways to demonstrate how awesome non-boss opponents are in mid-combat, every time you fight them. You will spend half your time looking at little circles, trying to tap the screen at exactly the right microsecond, instead of watching the game. You might want to rush to the next opponent, but the game will force you to wait until your score is updated before you can run instead of walk. When your character at the moment is defeated, you will be forced to watch the next character climb up the cliffs, along with a clip of how he met the princess. You will also be forced to look at the Game Center leader boards after defeating the final boss, where you will see scores in the lead, are most likely the results of a hack. Demoralizing, in a number of ways. The original promoted a sense of power and control for progressing, but this reminds you that you're playing the game that the designers want you to play. Forget that pride you experienced when you finally figured out how to keep the princess from killing you in the original. Your only value is how high your score is.
I'd delete it, if I didn't enjoy gazing at my phone intently and tapping at it like a drunken pigeon.
Needs to be updated with full Voice Over support!
I was really excited when I saw this app on the app store and decided to download it, but when I did, I discovered that it didn't work. The music played but that's all that happened. I am completely blind and use the voiceover screen reader on my iPhone but for some reason it didn't work with this app even know it was supposed to be voiceover accessible. Please update and make it fully voiceover accessible if possible because I would love To play this game, which sounds really wonderful and fun and fascinating. Thank you and happy Easter exclai! ColeAndPhoebeForever!
A little like the old Kareteka
Some bugs need to be fixed. Once you get passed the first level you have to tap the screen to walk, at the beginning of the game you just had to press on the screen to walk continuously.
The other bug is, once you get to where you are tapping on the screen to walk it no longer lets you pick up the flowers that give you life.
The game is not that hard, I beat it on the first try but with my 3rd man. If I could have picked up the life flowers through out the game I probably could of won with the 1st man given to me on the 1st try.
