Not well suited to desktop play

I bought the OS X version of this game after having enjoyed it for a long time on my iPhone, and it was only 99¢. But I’m not terribly happy with it. It’s simply not anywhere close to being as enjoyable to play on a Mac as it is on iOS.

I don’t know if this is a Yosemite-specific problem—the game hasn’t been updated since Mountain Lion, after all—but the way the type displays in it on my MBP running 10.10.4 is all out of whack. It’s like there’s a disparity between the font size, the line spacing, and the size of the text fields set up to display text in: Almost every piece of text in the game displays only the top half of every character. The last one or two characters in some places also are not visible, especially in places with numbers, like the hex counter and the time remaining counter—in Time Attack and Level Challenge, it is impossible for me to tell how much time is remaining, as all I can usually see of it is the top half of the first digit.

More generally, though, this game just isn’t well suited to playing with traditional pointing devices. Whether using a mouse, a trackpad, or a trackball, it’s just not possible to move the cursor both as quickly and as precisely as I can move my finger on the touchscreen of my iPhone. I can set the cursor to a faster tracking speed but lose precision, or I can set it to a slower speed and be more precise, but there is no sweet spot in the middle where both speed and precision are suitable. I suppose a pen tablet like a Wacom might do well, as that uses absolute positioning like a touchscreen, but more traditional pointing devices use relative positioning, so you can’t get anywhere without covering the space in between.

In general, then, it’s just disappointing. It’s only 99¢, as I said, so it’s not exactly “wasting” money to get it, but I wouldn’t advise paying it for this game on OS X if you've never played it before. If you want to try it, get the iOS version instead and play it on your iPhone or iPad.
