"This Is Not A Test carves its own path with zest."

This Is Not a Test is an apocalyptic graphic novel gamebook that pits your survival skills against the mayhem of doomsday as a strange death gas threatens humanity. Like a Choose Your Own Adventure, each panel of this RPG gamebook poses you choices that move the story forward. Create your fate by choosing your own path through the doomsday simulation -- the choices you make will unlock new paths in your quest for survival -- that is, if they don’t leave you dead in the chemical wasteland. Your selection of skills, the items you scavenge, and the survivors you bring will unlock possibilities and set you racing to survive the apocalyptic doomsday mayhem!

The base version of the game contains the original black and white background art, a gruelling life regeneration timer, and banner ads. The pro upgrade removes timers, banners, and unlocks color background art for every single panel of the story.

"A lot of unique flavor from the get-go"

"The writing in This Is Not A Test stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the art."

A gamebook by definition, This Is Not a Test mixes RPG elements with a Choose Your Own Adventure styled graphic novel. Choosing skills, scavenging items, and bringing companions will affect your quest for survival. All scenes and all of the user-interface is hand-illustrated by amazing comic artist Jeff Edwards, in a gritty, apocalyptic style. The writing is blunt, pulpy, and cruel, hurling you into the skin of a victim racing for survival in the mayhem of the final moments of humanity. As a gamebook, it is shorter and punchier than its long-winded rivals, with a focus on the amazing art. As graphic novel RPG, its mechanics are streamlined, and won’t have you drowning in numbers. As a survival game, it pushes you ruthlessly toward your eventual demise in the death gas — unless you do something about it.

Explosions are heard in the distant skies and a terrible death gas looms over the population. An emergency broadcast announces a MANDATORY EVACUATION to the mountain shelter of Fort Eisenhower. Doomsday is at hand! Mayhem is immanent! The way is treacherous, and the quest for survival will be difficult. What will you do?

It's a good start

This game looked really good (black & white or color) and the over all concept of a choose your own adventure in comic book form was fine.

To me the glaring issue was it felt like there was supposed to be a lot more stories to tell but that never quite happens.

Certainly there's a lot of replay ability from the stand point that different skill sets (you only get 3) open up different options in the game.
Sadly, you always end up getting funneled down to a couple of possible endings (other than just dying in he wastes).

It's hard to recommend spending money on this at the moment but if you don't mind throwing a buck at it for something different to do and to encourage the developers then go for it.

Hopefully in time they will double the amount of content and flesh out the overall stories a bit more so that we get more satisfaction out of our endings.

Got my hopes up...

It’s possible that with the ability to save, or at least non-randomized outcomes – that This is a Not a Test might have been an interesting title, but that is not what happened. Instead you have a game where you are going to fail a lot until you learn of every possible contingency plan for each situation based on your current skills and what items they either did or didn’t give you. Unfortunately, the game’s extremely bland writing – and sometimes confusing artwork – wasn’t really built to stand up against the extreme scrutiny it goes through when viewed with this kind of forced repetition.

Too many closed story loops

Story loops need to be fixed. I die. I go back to a checkpoint and am only given one option which results in me still dying. The only option from there is to start a new game and try to redo all of the correct choices to not die and end up in the same loop.

Ended up deleting the game to spend time on better games.
