Lacking that certain something

I was an early adopter of the game and I've checked up on it several times through its post-release development. The game obviously looks good and benefits from a good composer, but it is an unabashed Zelda clone that tries too hard to mimic the success of classic adventure games, but without an engaging hook that kept me entertained and willing to push on. In many ways Oceanhorn is a prime example of what a premium iOS game should be: good looking, small (file size), MFi controller support, and iCloud saving. However the gameplay does not hold up. Clunky controls (both touch and controller) make combat and navigation cumbersome. While the lack of a meaningful map or objective indicators could be construed as a throwback to classic adventure games, this is 2015 and we're playing on the most mobile multimedia device ever created. The game should make more concessions to be applicable to very short gaming sessions. The list of problems goes on, and I'll cap them with an incredibly frustrating and unsatisfying boss encounter against a tentacled plant monster thing. This boss drove me from the game several times, and each time that I reinstall the game and try again (sometimes months in between ), the same boss fight stymies me with incredible frustration. Finally with the help of a new MFi Bluetooth controller, i defeated the boss and immediately deleted the game afterwords. For good, this time.

Amazing!!

I was unsure when I bought this game at first because of some negative reviews. Whatever problems they had, must be solved now, cause none of them have happened to me. Like the orientation lock thing, works just fine in both ways. And the other problem I read about with the not being able to move crates: Well, I can see how somebody could get confused with this. See, you can move crates just fine, but some are un-moveable, but are completely unnecessary to move. (Like they're just in the middle of nowhere or out in the open) and you cannot pull crates. That is something people might have been confused with. But there is always a reset button next to all the crates. So you can restart with the crates back in their normal position. So overall, great game so far! ( I actually have not finished it yet) And I have not had any problems that others seem to have had. 😕 So it could have been a simple misunderstanding or confusion. Btw great job developers on such a small file size for such a large game!!! 😄😄

Shining example of what a mobile game can be

i just completed playing through Oceanhorn, and it’s the most satisfying and memorable mobile game I’ve played to date. A lot of great work went into the graphics, level design and overall feel and it adds up to a sort of mini or “lite” version of a full-on console game.

There are definitely some flaws (the last level / final battle are disappointing, it’s way to easy to get trapped in parts of the environment, etc.) but they are all quite forgivable when measured against how much quality you get from the game overall.

I’m a huge Zelda fan, and I really appreciate what has been borrowed from those games. This is probably the best Zelda-like game I’ve played on any platform, outside of the actual Zelda franchise games themselves. In the end, I very much enjoyed the 18 hours I spent in the world of Oceanhorn, and I’m excited by what this developer has accomplished on the platform. Thank you for the fantastic experience and I hope see see more like this in the future!!
