Lacking that certain something
I was an early adopter of the game and I've checked up on it several times through its post-release development. The game obviously looks good and benefits from a good composer, but it is an unabashed Zelda clone that tries too hard to mimic the success of classic adventure games, but without an engaging hook that kept me entertained and willing to push on. In many ways Oceanhorn is a prime example of what a premium iOS game should be: good looking, small (file size), MFi controller support, and iCloud saving. However the gameplay does not hold up. Clunky controls (both touch and controller) make combat and navigation cumbersome. While the lack of a meaningful map or objective indicators could be construed as a throwback to classic adventure games, this is 2015 and we're playing on the most mobile multimedia device ever created. The game should make more concessions to be applicable to very short gaming sessions. The list of problems goes on, and I'll cap them with an incredibly frustrating and unsatisfying boss encounter against a tentacled plant monster thing. This boss drove me from the game several times, and each time that I reinstall the game and try again (sometimes months in between ), the same boss fight stymies me with incredible frustration. Finally with the help of a new MFi Bluetooth controller, i defeated the boss and immediately deleted the game afterwords. For good, this time.
Great game. A little flawed .Needs a more original sequel.
Oceanhorn is exactly what you expect;
a Zelda clone for iOS. The graphics are beautiful.
The gameplay is decent. It has many of the qualities we're used to in the LOZ franchise such as bombs, puzzles, cutting grass, breaking pots, solving puzzles, boss battles, and more. Whether you find this to be a plus or minus is up to you (I personally bought this game because of it's similarity to LOZ) the controls need a little work: the movement pad can get confused and that leads to some awkward combat. The bow and arrow also could be more intelligent: I find my self pressing the shoot button, aiming, and then releasing only to find the character lower the bow instead of firing. This happens ~20% of the time while in combat. A good fix for this would be an auto target system for the bow, or some indication that the hero is aiming at an enemy. The shops and gold in this game seem to be irrelevant, since there is always plenty of grass and pots lying about in which to recover hearts and supplies. So far I've collected ~900 gold and haven't spent a single one. I do enjoy playing this game when I have some time to kill, I hope that buy purchasing this game I have funded an equally ambitious and enjoyable sequel.
Not For The Game Perfectionist
This game seems to have everything it needs to be stellar. It's got a terrific score and decent graphics (think early DSi) - but there are a few major flaws that can't been seen past. I can't tell you how many times I said "f-- this game" very passionately. The biggest flaws are with the controls. For what this game lacks in overall challenge, it makes up for the unnecessarily difficult to maneuver controls. The item being held (be it shield or bomb, etc) is randomly selected/activated without being clicked. You can be pointing the character to one part of the screen and it will move to the opposite. The storyline is also fairly mediocre and forced. It's also heavily copy-catting LoZ: Phantom of the Hourglass. Amongst other things, it carries itself well and it's pretty alright for $10. What drove me to create this review was my run-in with the boss the person below mentions. I was about half-way through killing it (which, mind you, took me about a half-and-hour to get to) and due to mechanical flaws (I'm not making excuses, there was quite seriously nothing I could do about it) my character was wiped out. Is this an overall okay game? Yes. Would I recommend it to a friend? Most likely - no.
