Please add refresh and menu customization
I've been using the app to write for years, so obviously I like it, but there are a couple things I want to see fixed.
Lately the buggy refresh has been driving me crazy. If I edit on the phone, the changes to the document show up on desktop nearly instantaneously. But the same is not true in reverse. If I edit a document on my desktop and then switch to the mobile app, the changes can take HOURS OR DAYS to show up. The document will not refresh on mobile and there's apparently no way to force it to sync with iCloud at any given time. It often won't refresh until I go open the document on desktop and open/save it over and over. This makes switching between devices a horrible pain. The developers say this is iCloud's problem, not theirs, but it worked perfectly until the recent big update.
Second, the app and desktop both have trouble keeping place when you're switching between Preview mode and Write mode, as is necessary when editing. I end up scrolling up and down al the time to find the proper place to put my edits.
In general, it's a great platform for writing and if they can fix these things I'll give it 5 stars again.
Good architecture, frustrating usage
I like the core idea and design behind iA Writer. A distraction-free writing app that supports MarkDown and syncs with my laptop is perfect for keeping notes and writing documents. Unfortunately, iA Writer has enough frustrations in its writing experience that the app really becomes an impediment, not assurance, to writing. Things like being hard-coded to using a monospace font (with no way to change it); an awful and buggy "undo" command; and poorly designed menu and button system all get in your way and slow down your writing.
If you can overlook the frustrations, the app is great (especially now they it kinda has image embedding support). But if you use it long enough, you'll start looking for something better to replace it.
Outstanding Product
I’ve purchased and used so many different products. I will update this review at a later time with much greater detail, but for now, please suffice it to say that this is an outstandingly well designed, engineered and executed product across the line from Mac to iOS. Response from the company is outstanding as well. They should charge more for the products. I look forward to finding and purchasing more products from them as well.
