These tours are unbelievable!
My husband and I were fortunate enough to visit both Chicago and New York this summer. By pure accident, I found Detour while I was looking for something else. We have officially completed six tours, and two of them left me in tears (the good kind!). The tour guides are locals, and have a deep love and connection with the places they are guiding you through. Additionally, each tour has hidden gems along the way- fantastic surprises that you would never find out about if not for these tours.
The features of the app itself are also great- you can sync your phone with a partner or small group (making starting and pausing much easier) and thusly, only have to pay for one tour (it is absolutely worth the money- I promise). The GPS system also seems to work great! It knows exactly where you are, and adjusts the timing of the tour accordingly. There are also pictures on the phone along the way that serve as landmarks for added help. Previews of each tour are available before you begin so that you know exactly where you'll be and what you'll be seeing.
This app is absolutely, heart-breakingly beautiful. Happy traveling!
modern city tours, with personal connections
I teach architectural and urban history at the university level, and found Detours to be an excellent app for travelers and locals, but also students and teachers. The sync feature allows a small group to walk and listen to the tour together, enriching the shared experience.
Each tour is narrated by a local resident, and often times others who live in the area chime in. That gives it a personal point of view, often mixing city history with some family history. We started with "The Mission" tour in San Francisco. The pace and the notes about "Virgin alert" and other key points were fun and informative. I appreciated the comments on the gentrification of the Mission and the fact that the tour narrators touched on the complexity of change. While not polemical per se, they did not sugar-coat the story of the area. Excellent interactivity with the sites, murals and their stories. Interesting history behind some of the developments and efforts of development.
We also did "Surfing the Richmond." We knew nothing of the surf culture there and it was quite special walking near and by the water and hearing the stories of how it all started.
Overall, this is an excellent app with wonderful potential. I look forward to following their guides in many other neighborhoods of San Francisco and other cities, as well. Keep up the good work!
The BEST way to explore a city!!!
Whether you want to explore your own home town or a place you're visiting, this app is absolutely incredible. It's a unique way to tour at your own pace, based on your own interests, and with tons of golden nuggets throughout. Truly- the little surprises and treasures found on each tour offer an incomparable experience. Definitely better than any other tour experience I've had. They work so hard to really give you a historical, cultural, local, quality storytelling experience. My boyfriend and I had many dates featuring detours in our own city (SF) and can't wait to use them on our trip to Paris this summer!
