Description

Chapters is an app for creating, editing and saving ePub documents.

ePub is a popular file format for ebooks. It reflows content for comfortable reading on screen of any size from mobile phones to desktops. ePub file itself is a zip-archive of document’s text, images, graphics and a table of content, making them very portable between computers, tablets and smartphones.

With Chapters app you can
• open existing ePub files and create new ePub documents
• view an entire ePub document in vertical scroll view
• navigate through the document using its table of contents in window’s sidebar
• pinch to zoom and smart zoom with double-tap
• print document and export file to PDF
• add cover image and modify metadata (title, author’s name, date, genre)
• edit and format text
and save changes to the file.

If you encounter a bug or experience app crashing, please contact app’s support at chapters@shaw.ca Thank you!

What’s New

Version 3.1

Chapters is available now for iOS and iPadOS. If you have Chapters on Mac, you should be able to download Chapters on iPad and iPhone running iOS 15 or higher. It is set up as “universal purchase”, which is a one-time purchase of the app for all supported devices.

Chapters supports handoff (a part of continuity) between Mac, iPad and iPhone. Check out "Use handoff to continue tasks on your other devices" https://support.apple.com/102426 for handoff set up and use.

If you haven’t updated to Chapters version 3.0, please note that adding images and media files is not available at the moment and will be restored in the coming updates.

In addition, Chapters version 3.0 removed the ability to import WebArchive and MHT (MHTML) files or export ePub documents to MHT. In case you want to continue using those features, you can keep two copies of the app: keep one copy of Chapters updated from the App Store and another copy of Chapters not updated and stored in a zip-archive or on removable USB drive as described below.

• For storing in zip-archive: In Finder, go to Applications folder and select Chapters. Then in the menubar choose File > Duplicate, then File > Compress. Keep compressed copy of the app anywhere on your Mac. You can then update app from the App Store.

• For storing on removable USB drive: In Finder select Chapters in Applications folder. Then in menubar choose File > Duplicate. After that move app's copy to USB drive. Eject USB drive in Finder. Then run an update from the App Store.

Remember that App Store will update only one copy of the app on your Mac. Therefore make sure there is only one copy of the app located in Applications folder. If there is a copy left hanging in the Trash, empty Trash before starting this update.

Chapters runs now natively on Apple silicon and Intel-based Macs with macOS version 11.0 or higher.

Simple graphic insertion corrupts other formatting

I’m wanting to put a jpeg in place of the png in an epub generated by Pages. (Everything else looks great on the Kindle upload of the epub straight out of Pages.)

Sigil enabled me to change the graphic, but then it threw a blank line after every paragraph in the whole book!

Chapters worked “better”: deleting the placeholder png image and inserting the jpeg JUST inserts a blank line between every paragraph throughout the chapter I edited. Still, very disappointing for a paid App!

Also, the save feature wouldn’t work to a volume other than the startup volume.

If I could find a way to request my money back, I would do so.

I also tried BlueGriffin (mentioned by another review), but that doesn’t edit epub documents natively.

Does the job

I needed a simple ePub editor. Sigil was screwing up the table of contents for some reason. Calibre was screwing up Sanskrit (OK, I have peculiar needs). BlueGriffon seems to have dissapeared — numerous emails to the company went unanswered.

Chapters just works great, does the job. Thank you.

Cannot handle portrait vs landscape orientation

Converted a landscape epub into a portrait pdf, covering just the top half of the page. Very limited editing facilities, and printing is quite basic. Would not recommend - If I could, I would demand a refund, but I don’t even know where to start
