Created by one of the founding fathers of the contemporary digital arts aesthetic, Joshua Davis, and software designers, Wolter Group, REFLECT explores the artistic side of the iPhone and iPod Touch. Working with shape and color palettes from Joshua Davis, design your own works of art and play with them in a reflective kaleidoscopic.
"Mr. Davis' work explores the technical and aesthetic limits of software programs to generate unique visual compositions according to rules-based, randomized processes," -The Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum.
"Random isn’t always pretty, but it is fun. Come walk, or rather, design in my shoes." -Joshua Davis
- Select from 6 unique shape groups and 10 color palettes. Mash them up.
- Design your own generative art piece
- View and interact with your creation in a Kaleidoscopic view
- Save and share your creations
Fun and entertaining; glad I have it. Good for the price; but could be much better with better color options. Palettes are too restrictive. If you could build your own palette ---- limited to number of colors ---- that would offer users a much broader range of creativity to play differently. Also, some of the patterns seem to be heavily weighted for larger shapes, which fill the screen too quickly. (If there is a touch-sensitive size control, I have not been able to modify it yet.) The kaleidoscope is not all that interesting because it is always the same size and screen layout. What about making it only one or 4 patterns that can be positioned on the screen to have it centered or off-center by touching the location? The options are endless and this version is a bit limiting.
Brilliant open source art
I would love to see Apple celebrate and promote applications like this in the iTunes application store instead of things like the 'The Moron Test' that I think doesn't do anything but prove that if you buy the test you are a moron. This is a celebration of the art of Joshua Davis done in a way that lets you become part of the process to create your own unique pieces of art. I have found myself spending a disturbing amount of time with this application over the past 48 hours enjoying the right brain/left brain experience created from this intersection of art and technology.
Great Concept and Execution
Very cool and addicting app. Like the choice of images and contrasts. In future versions I imagine you could continue to add varied palettes (how about letters and numbers?). Love how you have control over the images but only to a point. Making mini creations with the randomn factor makes it addictive. Like the Jackson Pollock concept. Similar to painting. Something random happens with your hand and you have to go back in and blend it together and keep repeating until you find what you were looking for. Nicely done. Very cool concept. Hope people appreciate this one.
