Description

KQ Dixie is a 6-Operator FM synthesizer that is modeled on the synthesizer which appeared on the 1980s.

FM synthesizers make sounds with Frequency Modulation.
FM brings rich and brilliant sounds which are impossible to create with analog one.
It makes very complex waves with simple modulations.
The same method is used for a radio.
The synthesizer gained much popularity in the 1980s.

This app lets you make sounds freely with 156 voice parameters.
Almost all parameters are compatible with DX7.

No guarantee with 32-bit devices.
*** Not compatible with iPhone 4S. ***
Audio Unit v3 compatible.
Audiobus compatible.
32 algorithms included.
You can manage the hardware DX7 when it is connected with external MIDI cables.
Supports DX7 System Exclusive Messages (SysEx) and syx files.
Supports Zip files.
You may be able to find a lot of patches on the internet.

Yamaha DX7 is a trademark of Yamaha Corporation.
I have no business relations with Yamaha.

What's New

Version 1.1.3

A bug-fix: The Zip-like files were always opened in KQ Dixie at Files.app.
As a side effect, "KQ Dixie" disappears from "On My iPhone/iPad" at Files.app.
In addition, Zip and Syx files may not open out from Files.app when you installed the past version once.
In that case, Copy files to iCloud, Start KQ Dixie application, and Open them.

Excellent DX7 FM emulation

The Virtual Keyboardist

I am a professional keyboardist who uses iOS soft synths exclusively in live performances and studio work. I am also a sound designer and create my own sounds. I don’t use presets. I’ve been needing an excellent DX 7 emulator to properly create 80’s style synth patches, and I’m thrilled to now have one. The learning curve on this one for a programmer is difficult if you’re not used to FM synthesis, and the fact that the user manual is not in English can be a challenge...BUT... The emulation is so similar to the DX7 that you can learn what you need by reading a Yamaha DX7 manual (find PDF online). I’ve already created several patches and am using those to replace my previous sounds created using other types of synths. I see reviews with certain requests...but some may be missing the point that this is a pretty accurate emulation...with the benefits of the original and some of the “flaws” of the original. Example: I love that this uses only sine waves in its operators. Other FM synths use sine plus more complex wave forms. They sound great, but the DX7 only used sine waves and therefore so does KQ Dixie. Fantastic development work here.

80’s DX7 mojo is here, but this outstanding synth is capable of so much more.

JRSIV1975

Yamaha’s DX7 digital synthesizer was EVERYWHERE in the 1980’s. It’s FM digital synthesis was capable of very unique sounds. Although because of the great difficulty programming the original hardware units, most everyone just used the presets. Those 32 original voices are here too, and have their charm, but the real draw to Dixie is that the thousands upon thousands of voices & patches created by DX7 users over the past 30 years are compatible with the app! Google DX7 patches (sysex format), download the patch or a .zip of patches, import into Dixie via the Files app. That easy. Plus if you want to create new custom patches, I’ve never seen an FM synth that made patch editing easier to grasp. There’s plenty of effects and controls are easy to read & interact with. This app could be 10x more expensive and it’d be well worth it. Highly recommended.

DX7 in Cubasis! The Algorithms are perfect, filters sound amazing!

Thirdnail

Okay so the User Interface may look 2 dimensional, but it actually works perfectly for an FM synth. The sound is FAR FROM 2 dimensional! 32 algorithms with 6 voices... with beautiful filters and effects.
I too waited a day to see if anyone gave it any reviews, I seen that they were all good reviews and realized that I pay $3.99 for a bad hamburger just about everyday! Drop the 4 bucks, you will not lose any sleep 💤 (unless you’re like me and stay up all night making patches)
I have a feeling this will be on Apple’s editors choice apps before long.

The ONLY complaint that I see people may have is: There are not enough presets that come with the app. I hope the dev decides to make many patch banks... (would be cool, if users had a quick link to share there patches, as well as download other users Presets.)
