First released for the iPad, the Mac version of LetterMpress takes you a step up in resolution and control for creating authentic looking letterpress prints.
The Mac version includes:
• Full-screen and resizable desktop view.
• Prints can be created as high as 8192 pixels. That’s over 26” at 300 dpi!
• Up to 4x the output resolution of the iPad.
• Menus, mouse actions, and keyboard shortcuts for moving, scaling, and rotating objects on the press bed.
LetterMpress is a creative environment that lets you design beautiful compositions with vintage wood type and art cuts on a virtual hand-driven printing press.
LetterMpress gives you the experience of producing your designs on a letterpress — placing and arranging type on the press bed, inking, and then turning the hand crank to make a print.
Every step in the printing process is replicated on the Mac, to give you an authentic, interactive experience.
Try something new. Experiment. Have fun! You’ll soon see why the art and craft of letterpress is becoming so popular.
LetterMpress is easy to learn and fun to do, but it’s not a toy. Create designs with authentic wood type and vintage “art cuts.” You can mix custom colors and make multiple impressions on a single sheet. The specially designed studio environment lets you create and save several variations.
Once you have created your prints you can print, copy, or export. The files can be opened or imported by most popular graphics applications, allowing you to integrate authentic wood type and art impressions into your design palette.
With LetterMpress you can create:
• Fine art posters
• Event posters and mailers
• Music CD covers
• Greeting cards
• Scrapbook covers and interior pages
• Framed wall art, and more...
Type and art that comes with LetterMpress is royalty-free for personal and commercial use.

I've been using this app with my Mac mini OS X for about 3 months now and love it. It runs perfectly with no issues! One of my favorite features is the "transparent paper" which lends itself to so many other computer applications and design opportunities such as collage, etc. It's so easy transferring your letterpress designs into your layouts with this feature. There's a lovely range of lettering and graphics, paper styles and inks. I've made cards, collage, gift tags and a book cover using LetterMpress. It's one of my absolute go-to apps for design.
As my husband says the only two things this app seems to lack compared to a real printing press are the inky fingers and and the textural quality of the finished product. (Of course, you can use your creative genius to work out the latter.)
I highly recommend this one.
very cool app, lots of potential
i've only played a bit with the app, but it has tremendous potential. don't be mis-lead by negative reviews. they obviously don't understand professional graphics apps. no, this is not a banner making app. it's an app that tries to replicate the expereince of old-school letterpress printing, while giving you some digital freedoms. the output can go huge, you can "print" on transparant paper, allowing you to export w/ transparency. then load that file in pshop and go to town. one thing i noticed when saving at the highest res: the paper texture was just up-resed, and was kind of blurry. that could be solved by having your own high res paper texture and add in pshop. when i've been unsure about how to do something (like rotate or scale), it was easily found on the help screen.
Love this app. Runs smoothly on my iMac- no issues! Often I bounce exports to photoshop or illustrator- which is great as the app offers printing on transparent paper. This makes it super easy to drop in letterpress style images, text, graphics into final layouts. I've done cards, brochures, event marketing, a video (!), fine art prints… excellent! Or just output right from the app with beautiful resolution.
Would love to see a few operations automated in the layout process, like multiple selection for scaling. And it'd be great to allow import of images to create your own drawer of woodblocks. But I suspect there will be exciting developments as the folks behind this app have been regularly adding new art and additional features.
One of my faves.
