Our enthusiastic customers range from hobbyists to professional astronomers, and everyone in between. Whether you want to admire ancient constellations, watch satellites soaring overhead, find out what that brilliant dot is on the horizon, or recreate eclipses, Luminos has what you need.
Browse the largest deep space image catalog of any mobile app, anywhere, or track 3D meteor showers now or from the past. Travel through time, identify craters on the moon, fly through space, watch the solar system in motion from high above, or see the multitudes of asteroids orbiting perilously close to our planet. Hold Luminos up against the sky and it will effortlessly guide you to find any star or planet.

You can even get live sky charts and satellite alerts on your Apple Watch! Luminos makes it all easy and fun.

Detailed data on every object is easily available within Luminos, even without an Internet connection. Powerful planning tools help you make the most of your evenings by showing you exactly what will be visible tonight or any night in the future.

What's New in Version 9.0.1

Version 9.0.1 fixes bugs and crashes in the original Luminos 9 release. We've prevented crashes when deleting downloaded star catalogs, launching the app from a satellite flyover alert, and other less common problems. We've made pull-to-refresh for satellites easier on short screens, fixed multi-line note entry, restored descriptions for some planetary surface features, and made the Apple Watch data more reliable on first launch. We added star distance displays in parsecs, as well. Check the in-app release notes for the full list of changes.

Read on for more about the original Luminos 9 release.

The highlight of the Luminos 9 release is downloadable, customizable star catalogs featuring the largest collection available on any mobile platform: the full UCAC4 with more than 113 million stars!

Choose which size catalog you want based on your needs and device storage: Tycho-2 (2.5 million), UCAC4 Light (25 million), UCAC4 Medium (50 million) or UCAC4 Complete (113 million). Augment your choice with additional supplements such as APASS, 2MASS, Survey Photometry, Proper Motion, or Error Statistics. Catalogs are free to download and can be changed or deleted at any time.

We've also fully embraced the latest iOS 9 technologies such as split-screen multitasking and Spotlight searching on your device.

Our Apple Watch app has been updated to run faster and more reliably for watchOS 2.0, and our watch glance now includes sun/moon rise and set times, and quick access to the moon phase.

There are more additions throughout the app, such as an animated representation of the solar analemma and many new moons and textures.

Check the Release Notes in the app for more detail. Enjoy!

Customer Reviews

One of the 'Best-of-the-Best'...

I use this app with several others in tow (they all have certain strengths and weaknesses). I also combine this app with object catalogs, like Messier, Cadwell, general star reference books, etc. When in the field, under very dark skies, this app certainly helps out when your minimum magnitude becomes fainter and it's difficult to near impossible to separate the dense star fields...'hats-off' to the developers; the small fee to own such an excellent product is a mere after-thought. For those new to astronomy, to those using scopes, binoculars, or the naked eye, this app becomes (pardon the cliche) priceless....

P.S. I especially like this app when I'm searching for double, triple, and small star cluster fields. And I truly enjoy the short descriptions associated with the app. I also -- I could go on for quite awhile pointing out this apps many, many features, but I won't; this is a review, and listing what I like and use would require writing a short book. Well, you get the point, me thinks....JWS

The best!

I have been raked over the coals by Southern Stars (Sky Safari) now twice on expensive ($40) upgrades before finding this amazing app.

This Dev updates app often without charging you outrageous upgrade fees every few months! It includes everything Sky Safari has to offer and more! A huge thank you for the updates! Please keep up the great work and know it's appreciated very much by those who are not rich enough to keep paying ridiculous update costs just to get bug fixes. Southern Stars left Sky Safari 4 a buggy mess and abandoned it fixing these bugs in Sky Safari 5, but charging people $40 for those bug fixes. Never again! Thank you Luminos!

Amazing and impressive

This is definitely one of the more expensive apps around, but worth every penny. Every little detail about it is impressive, the animations, the giant image set, the support for new OS features, and especially the way it lets you easily fly to any destination. You can see that the author has a real vision in how to bring advanced astronomy to everyone.

It took me a while to find just how much substance there really is here because the controls are so minimal, but that’s because the app gets out of your way and let you enjoy the view. Very Apple-like. I’m super-impressed that they got the 100 million star catalog in here… that’s pretty wild!
