THE MOST AUTHORITATIVE FITNESS APP
“I just came from a commercial gym and watched four guys nearly break their backs attempting what I can only assume was a deadlift. It’s invaluable that with this app, you learn how to do exercises properly right before you try them.”
– Tony Gentilcore, C.S.C.S, Cressey Performance

“Men's Health is by far the most cutting edge popular fitness magazine--it often beats some of the scientific journals to the punch by providing proven training methods and protocols. This app is more than just workouts. It’s a partner that you can take with you to the gym to track your progress and perfect your form.”
– JC Santana, C.S.C.S, owner of Institue of Human Performance in Boca Raton, FL

“For years, MH has been helping real guys see real results, and in this app, you’re getting that same perfect mix of science and real-world training from the best coaches on the planet.”
– Chad Waterbury, M.S., author of Huge in a Hurry

"When you have so little time available for personal fitness, why waste it wandering through the gym wondering where to begin? With the Men's Health Workouts, you're guaranteed access to smart exercise programming designed to address specific goals, and achieve the results you're looking for."
– Tom Vachet, master trainer of NBA and NHL athletes, President of Elite Performance Management

Lot's of room for improvent

What's included in each "workout" is really deceiving. What they call the "Complete" Abs workout has 4 exercises. "Elite" ab has 4. The "Killer core strength series: week 1" has 3. Who goes to the gym and does 3 exercises? Instead of 50 workouts with 3 or 4 exercises, why not give us less workouts, but make each one a complete 10-12 exercise gym visit. If not, at minimum, let us select individual exercises to create your own workout.

Don't get tricked into buying the "expansion" packs. The details screen doesn't tell you at all what exercises or how many you're getting. So you could end up getting 3 exercises for something they call the "ultimate". Worse, you think you're going to get a new workout called what you bought, like "the ultimate abs pack" with all the exercises in one workout. Instead, they download to the individual exercises page - not to a workout. You only get one signal that it's "new" so if you don't write it down, you'll never remember what you just bought. Ongoing, you have to remember the name of each exercise to find it later and do your new "ultimate abs pack" workout. Just really poor user design.

On the positive side, the step by step visuals and instructions are clear for each exercise. Would prefer that there be a video option also, but overall this part is fine.

Fabulous app, but...

Everything included in this app is outstanding, with the exception of one major 'But'. The workouts are all world-class, described in excellent detail so someone completely inexperienced could walk into a gym and start something right away. That said, while I do understand it is in the publishers interest to promote the workout expansion pack, there is absolutely zero reason for you to not be able to put together your own workout routine. There are 4 or 5 workouts that ive been working out (no pun intended) of for a few weeks, and its an insanely frustrating time waster to have to back all the way out to the homescreen just to go and find a different exercise to log a set of. Also, in the exercise list, whats the problem with having the A-Z scroll on the side so I don't have to scroll through every single routine when i'm trying to get to something toward the bottom. Now that I think of it, forcing me to sit through the splash page with the situation showing off his abs EVERY SINGLE TIME is a big one, too. Like I said, great app, but a few corners cut to increase in-app purchases really take what could be the finishing touches to a masterpiece and make this otherwise stellar app insanely frustrating to use at times.

Spartan Workout error

The ten station Spartan Workout on the app is the same as available online from Men's Health and in Adam Campbell's "Big Book of Exercises" with one problem. The stations in the app version are in the wrong order. Whomever programmed the app put the odd numbered stations first, then the even numbered ones. In other words stations on the app go 1,3,5,7,9,2,4,6,8,10. Not sure if that really makes a huge difference, but that lack of attention to detail makes me wonder what else did they did wrong.

I have to agree with the others who feel that Men's Health is more interested in generating money than putting out quality products. If they cared, they would review their programs (and these reviews), fix the errors, and publish updates.

Overall the app is OK. The pictures give you an adaquate idea on how to perform the exercises. I do not like the method to record your workout. The "dial" is cumbersome when you want to record a high number of repetitions (like for push ups or sit ups) and weights are multiples of five. That is usually OK for the wieght room, but if you use an eight or twelve pound medicine ball with an ab exercise, then you are out of luck.

I prefer the THI Trainer app.
