UI is clunky and split transactions don’t work
While the UI has improved with the most recent update, it’s still difficult to use. Take a look at the defunct PocketQuicken for something that was a joy to use.
The two biggest functional problems are with categorizing transactions and split transactions. There doesn’t seem to be any consistency when setting a category, if it selects one for you and this you have to scroll around to choose the right one, or if the selection table is scrolled to the top with the search bar revealed, where one can start typing and get the right category quickly. Having the search bar always visible and focused, even for preselected categories would be a huge improvement!
Entering split transactions almost always fails. When adding new splits, the first (or last, sometimes) split will change from “Payment” to “Deposit” and sometimes the amounts will change. A common problem is with two splits, the first will change to “Deposit” and change to the amount of the second split, resulting in a zero-sum transaction. Worse yet, while you can edit the transaction, making sure it shows the splits correctly, it still only synced the incorrect transaction! Often I catch the changes to the splits before leaving the screen showing the splits and before saving the transaction. I make the corrections, save it, and IT IS STILL SAVED INCORRECTLY! These problems make the app almost unusable.
One small change could make a huge difference!!
I’ve written reviews on this app in the past in hopes the Team at Infinite Kind would listen, and they did. I’m hoping for the same with this post.
First off, I love this app (desktop and mobile)....it’s one of the few that also syncs across Mac AND Windows (take that, Quicken!!). One thing the mobile app could really benefit from is moving the “+” button to the bottom right of the screen. As phones have increased in size it is difficult to reach the top of the screen with your thumb while on the go and trying to add a transaction. I know this seems small, but I use this app constantly and it would really help me and lots of others with general usability.
Thanks for making such a simple App that is both powerful and functional. I hope Infinite Kind continues investing in this software.
Great convenience, great syncing
My husband and I have been longtime users of Moneydance on our iMacs. We were delighted to be able to add Moneydance on our iPads and iPhones. It's so great being able to track our receipts while we're out in the world, and the syncing between all our devices has worked well most of the time.
The only downside for me is that when I add an item to a register while using my iPad, I can't use my wireless Apple keyboard to enter the amount of the transaction. I can use the keyboard for all the other fields, but not to enter the amount. I have to use the numeric keypad on the screen for that.
Otherwise, great app, and thanks for making it available on iOS with solid syncing support!
With Family Sharing set up, up to six family members can use this app.
