What's New in Version 24.1
The best for off road / outdoor
I've been using motion-x for several years after a guide suggested it to me. Absolutely indispensable for four wheeling and hiking. I find the user interface is just fine once you are comfortable with it and would not want them to dilute it down as many other apps have done. I also use it just for fun to keep track of verticals and just to see where all I've been during the day while skiing, and to keep track of mileage when jogging or walking the dog. Only weakness has been for boating - nautical maps seem to lack detail. Being able to save my tracks with different color codes and to download tracks from others has been a lifesaver when 4-wheeling out in the desert and mountains of Arizona. Without pre- recorded tracks, it is often nearly impossible to find some of the trails, and your own recorded track sure makes it easier to connect to your route home. Saves a lot of time and is a significant safety factor.
Function over Form
The UI is a bit clunky (and dare I say "ugly") by iOS design standards but despite its aesthetic shortcomings, this remains my go-to offline GPS navigation app for all outdoor adventures--specifically cross-country wilderness hiking. While users may need to familiarize themselves with the app's features and functions beforehand, it has now become an integral part of my trip-planning ritual. I never leave home without first downloading an area map of the hike, which has saved me in more than a few instances from wandering off-trail (I also like to obsessively check my progress). Not all trails are marked, however, and the ability to upload and store custom gpx tracks and waypoints has allowed me to explore a greater range of rugged terrain without fear of disorientation. The app's built-in track recorder tends to drain battery on my iPhone 6 so I typically use it in conjunction with another app (MapMyHike) for tracking fitness data. If you love exploring the outdoors, then you need this app to be safe!
Great bones, terrible UI
Bug: Stated waypoint elevation is actually your current elevation.
This app has allowed me to hike Volcán Corazón in Ecuador and Volcán Maderas in Nicaragua without guides (the trails are on the map). It's also great for dropping Points Of Interest in other countries when traveling without cell service. The maps in this app are awesome, it has Google, Apple, and Microsoft, but the MotionX maps are what I use for hiking. They have all the trails I've ever needed in the US as well, which is amazing. I'm going to Nairobi and Tanzania soon and will be using it there as well.
Unfortunately the UI is a massive mess. Confusing menus, some very odd methods to get to certain information, for example waypoints can have photos and descriptions attached, but you can't get to that area of editing from clicking on a waypoint on a map, you must go through a different set of Waypoint Menus. There are also buttons in odd places, like when you go to download the offline maps, the download button is hidden at the top, while there is text at the bottom of the page, where you'd expect the download button to be, telling you to click the word download at the top of the screen. Crazy. Probably the most capable app I've ever used with the least usable interface. Thus it's a must have, but could be waaay better with a redesigned UI.
Love/hate this app. But mostly love (thrilled it exists at all). Just has so much unrealized potential!
