Optimizations and bug fixes.
GPS without an Internet connection
Excellent app for using advanced GPS functions in a location with no Internet (i.e., no cell phone reception and no Wi-fi.)This app uses the built in GPS functionality of the iPhone to determine your longitude, latitude and altitude, based on the signal broadcast by the GPS satellites in orbit above the Earth- the GPS signals are available free for anyone to use, no cellular signal or wireless connection is required. Just remember to download the maps before you arrive at the location where there is no Internet access. Con: only allows 50 maps to be stored on your device. To download the maps, click Menu->Setup->Map downloads, then choose terrain or road map type. Use "road" map type for cities and use "terrain" map type for the back country or rural areas. Also somehow Google satellite view can be stored on the device- but don't zoom out too much or you will lose the detailed Google Satellite view and will need to download it again. Also, for people who have never used GPS before, you need a clear view of the open sky (the southern sky if you are in the Northern hemisphere or northern sky if you are in the Southern hemisphere) for a minimum of 2 to 6 minutes for your phone to detect the signal from the satellites-- you should be stationary or moving slowly during this initialization phase, not in a fast-moving vehicle.
great features/value, mediocre design
The good: this app has most of the functionality you want for off-the-grid navigation or hiking. You can download custom road, topo, and marine maps before you leave on your trip. It also shows your elevation which most other GPS apps don't seem to do for some reason. Also the app is super cheap and a great value over the competition.
The bad: the app looks like it was designed by about 10 different people who never communicated before they launched. The user experience and design can be a bit jarring and confusing (and ugly for that matter) at times. The app could really stand to have its features redesigned from the ground up. Another major concern is battery usage, but that is probably true for any iOS GPS app out in the wilderness.
A couple more things to note: the map downloads can be extremely large as they are not vector-based and download times can be slow. You'll need to start downloading potentially a few days before you head out on your trip.
Hunters take Note!
This App is the best 99 cents I've ever spent. I'm an Avid hunter and wanted a Navigation tool that has all of the features a hunter would need. Originally I spent 200 bucks at Costco for a Magellan that was designed for hunting. After much frustration at how worthless the thing was I returned it. I read the reviews on this app and went for it. I'm more than pleased. I can mark as many treestands, rubs, etc. as I want, add pictures, navigate to my stand in the dark, share my location with my buddy when I get a deer so he can drive th 4-wheeler to me, and even see the direction and yardage of all of my buddies when I'm settled in at my stand! The only complaint with any GPS is that it drains your battery, and with an iPhone you can't carry a spare. So I bought a Moby and I keep it in my Backpack.. It will charge an iPhone 3 times :-)
