Exactly what I wanted in a music learning app
Learning violin as an adult, and wanted to learn to read music as well. Downloaded as many apps as I could find; I think this is the best of the lot. It supports multiple users, so my son can use it as well with separate progress. It supports a large number of different instruments. The two games I use for violin are "tap that note", where you tap the letter of the note shown, and "play that note", where you play the note shown and the iPhone/iPad listens and and recognizes if the note is correct. There are also other features that I haven't used yet. Unfortunately, due to the violins nature, apparently several parts of the app are disabled for violin, which came as a disappointment. Still, I love using this app and it's helped my music reading skills tremendously.
Helpful and Addictive
In my experience with Music apps, I have browsed through hundreds and hundreds of apps. Throughout all of them this app is in my top 10. I understand that many people say that this app doesn't work with all instruments, but they are wrong. This app has worked for 9 different instruments I have tried, and based on what I have tried, I am positive that it works with all instruments. Mynotegames is also a one of the best ways I know to practice. This app lets you practice notes, rhythms and sounds. It can also help you learn an instrument. It will give you the sounds of the note, and then you can find the correct pitch on whatever instrument you are learning. Along with that it works as a tuner which can help out also. I guarantee that you will like this app, and if not it is a app that you have to try.
Very useful for teaching
(Note for Beth something re viola / alto clef: look up high, you should be able to select your clef.) Using Play That Note for violin and viola students. Sometimes it freezes, but when it works the students really learn from this, fast, effective. Notes must have clear beginnings to them (two notes on a row of the same pitch, if the bow change is too smooth, the second note doesn't register). I am also using the Play A Day, even though supposedly there are no exercises for violin, we pretend to be flute or oboe, it works fone for violin. Great for practicing sight reading, key signatures. Note value feedback is minimal. Also, the tuner is GREAT.
All in all this is a terrific app, I heartily recommend it.
