Here's a customer sharing his review on how it works;
Fishscale commented on 20 Aug 2010:
"I bought this app while it was in beta and the developer has definitely lived up to his word on making OL the greatest window switcher on OS X. I'm not sure if he even said OL would be the greatest but from a users standpoint it is. Every update gets better and more advanced features come in like spaces support, multi-monitor support, switching layout windows, and finally moving and resizing windows straight from the list of open apps. You can control most everything and the dev has managed to still keeps it super simple.
I have tried all the window arrangement apps and own licenses for a few of them, but OL takes the cake for sure. I know this comment is not really specific and was written quickly but I just want users to know how great this app is and how responsive the developer is to requests. Amazing application, I can't say more. All my window troubles have been solved! Give the app a try, at the price you can't find anything that compares... heck there is no app at any price that compares with the flexibility that OL has. Most impressive is the footprint. I would expect an app this powerful and always running to take up a lot of system resources but it doesn't. I think witch takes up more resources on my MBP than OL does. Simply amazing and worth a try."
What's New in Version 2.2.29
Important bug fixes and stability improvements.
Valuable, Yet Pricy
For the function that Optimal Layout serves it is an extremely expensive app. However, if you’re someone who uses a computer all day it is probably worth the money. I have had some problems with this app over time, mainly that the full screen button will disappear with regularity. I’m not sure if they have done anything to fix the problem, but for the price the app should be flawless.
Task switching and window sizing, perfected.
Not just another window resizing/snapping tool; this app uniquely gives the user a new, keyboard-friendly app/window/browser-tab switcher and manager that soon makes Cmd+tab obsolete. It’s completely customizable and blazingly fast, streamlined to minimize the amount of clicks/typing during use, and def. stable enough - despite very rare, harmless glitches-.
ideal for users who are;
a) Looking to do all their window / browser-tab resizing and management by keyboard, and faster than any other alternatives (see below)
b) looking for a window/tab manager that allows drawing on grids to instantly reshape windows (like Moom), or choosing/defining menu-bar actions to switch-displays, and toggle predefined window shapes for the active window (you can choose/customize as many menu-bar actions as you want, I don’t really use the menu-bar feature, preferring the all-keyboard methods)
USING ONLY THE KEYBOARD YOU CAN:
Switch windows/tabs (seeing browse rtabs as seperate items in the switcher is optional, but works great), default is alt-tab for this,
WHILE SWITCHING, instantly move app windows between screens, and/or snap them to fill predefined grids with shortcuts (comes with typical top/bottom, left/right halves etc, but you can customize your own window templates
WHILE SWITCHING, quit apps or close different windows of the app with a shortcut (typically with alt + Q and W)
WHILE SWITCHING, resize/ move windows using shortcuts (typically involving arrow keys with modifiers) step by step
Type part of the app/tab name while switching to instantly go to that item (starts searching as you begin to type while switching, no extra click necessary)
So switching a window to the external display and resizing it to fullscreen, takes less than a second for instance. Similarly, going through your browser tabs (with previews) and closing a dozen that don’t seem necessary is a lot faster compared to doing it using the browser.
This app, like powerpacked Alfred and PopClip before it, proved to be one of those game-changing utilities for me, constantly used and indispensable.
