Awesome turn based strategy game

By far the best game, of any sort, I've found so far. It's just you matched against people of equal skill for as long as you want play. You can start for free, and if you're good, nothing to stop you from going all the way to the top. You almost can't spend money on this game - I think if you bought everything they offered, you might spend $15..? And that only gives you variety of play, it doesn't actually give you a real advantage, so if you don't want to spend anything, you don't have to.
Also, the community behind this game is awesome - very active forum, lots of player initiated tournaments, helpful tips from the advanced players (someone even wrote a very detailed strategy guide for all the different game maps).
It's mildly glitchy since the last major overhaul, but the developers are very responsive and it runs pretty smoothly overall now.
All in all, a fantastic game for strategy nerds.

Great app

This game is very simple to get into, yet oh so deep in the top end. Moves smoothly, graphics are simple, yet charmingly appropriate. The game starts with one unit-set, and gives you the opportunity to purchase 3 more as an in-app bundle. I would highly recommend doing so, as your units not only receive a cool skin makeover, but it also adds 3 new signature units that could add multitudes of different ways to play strategically.
I play on an iPad 2, don't know how well the app works on the phone, but it is a stunning example of how the technology of a tablet should be utilized for gaming. Why this is a free app with no ads, I will probably never understand. It would be well worth spending $5.
The only issue I have with the game is there is no true 1 player mode, no AI you can tune up against. The game does, however, offer a great competitive system to find comparably skilled adversaries, and a pass n play mode that you can play locally with a friend.

Starcraft 2 + Chess

Simple to learn but hard to master. The four teams may seem similar at first, but once you get the hang of it you'll realize what a big difference the special units make and how differently each team plays. Not to mention the map variety which further mixes up the gameplay.

Also, search for Outwitters Sports Network by codepenguin on google. Amazing replay resource.

Edit: ouchalargerock's review is off regarding the balance. As a Super-Titan league player with a few accounts in the top 50 let me weigh in on this aspect. When you get to higher leagues against better players you'll realize that rushing isn't a good strat in most cases and longer games are common as good players can defend rushes. Also, snipers do not need a buff. In fact, on certain maps they are the lynchpin for victory. It is true that heavies are expensive though and you should avoid spawning them. Soldiers should be your main unit.
