What's New

Version 2.4

PDF Viewer 2.4 includes some noticeable enhancements scattered throughout the app, like a new blend mode option that makes highlighted text easier to read, various UI improvements for stamps and saved annotations, better JavaScript support in PDFs, and a redesigned and reorganized settings screen to make finding the option you are looking for even easier.

Here are the full changes for this release:

* Adds blend modes to the annotation inspector. The ink highlighter by default now uses a multiply blend mode, improving content legibility, most notably with black text.
* Improves comment author display to accommodate longer author names.
* Improves the settings UI.
* Improves button layout on the signature view.
* Improves state restoration to restore and persist selected annotations.
* Improves support for Dynamic Type, particularly for larger accessibility sizes.
* Improves the layout of the stamps grid, to always look reasonably dense, while keeping the stamps big enough to read.
* Improves JavaScript support, including form formatting, calculation, and validation.
* Improves rendering behavior for stamp annotations. Stamps are keeping their aspect ratio on resizing now.
* Improves CPU utilization and reduced battery usage with better render cancellation.
* Reintroduces and improves the edge tap gesture. It now allows fast tapping through a document.
* The home indicator on iPhone X is now automatically hidden when the user interface is not visible.
* Changes the default state of the Store Signature checkbox to be disabled to not store the created signature without users explicitly checking it.
* Makes the custom stamp option in the stamps UI more apparent.
* Moves 'Saved Annotations' to its own annotation toolbar item, as opposed to being a tab on the stamps UI.
* Sharing now only includes the document, not the title as well. This fixes a Text File being created alongside the PDF when exporting files.
* Fixes support for the doNotScroll property for form fields.
* Fixes an issue where the the "Add File" screen could not be displayed when opening an external file via the "Copy to PDF Viewer option" in some cases.
* Fixes full-text indexing explanation text being incorrectly placed at times.
* Fixes an issue where documents would not open after tapping on any toolbar button and a document at the same time.
* Fixes a crash in that could occur when selecting text if the initial selection did not contain any valid characters.
* Fixes a document's table of contents' colors not being shown correctly.
* Fixes a rare issue that could lead to a crash when rotating rapidly.
* Fixes an issue where embedded videos with autoplay enabled would start playing before their page was visible.
* Fixes an issue where the printing UI wouldn't prevent interactions with the rest of the application, breaking the printing flow.
* Fixes issues with pages not being displayed in page curl mode.
* Fixes layout of saved annotations and stamps UI on iPhone X.
* Fixes a crash which occurred when manually searching a protected document.
* Fixes a potential app freeze during document cache invalidation.
* Fixes an issue where newly created note annotations would require two taps for deselection.

Editors’ Notes

PDF Viewer impressed us right out of the gate with a streamlined interface packed with powerful features. Organizing, editing, and annotating documents is a snap thanks to toolbars that emphasize just the functions we need. Combined with Apple Pencil support, bookmark syncing over iCloud, and other modern capabilities, it’s like having a desktop-quality PDF toolkit wherever we go.

Latest Update Makes It Useless

I’ve used this app for a few months to take notes in school. It’s been beyond amazing. It’s exactly what I’ve been looking for in a PDF notation app. However, lately it’s started deleting my annotations randomly, making it completely unusable. I’ve lost hours of lecture notes at this point. As soon as this issue is fixed I’ll be happy to return to my 5-star rating, but for now, I can’t even use the app and am forced to purchase another option.
Update: Spoke to support and essentially every answer was “Well, that’s not our fault. That’s also not our fault. That’s an issue with a third party, and not our fault.” I understand having issues with third parties, but if the issues are so severe, stop advertising these features until the issues are worked out! Since then, the app has started freezing and crashing every single time I try to use it for more than 30 seconds, losing all my changes. But hey, that’s probably not their fault. This app would be absolutely perfect if it actually worked like it’s supposed to.

One positive note: their support is very responsive and gets back to me quickly every time.

Developer Response

I'm very sorry that this is happening for you! I fully understand how annoying it must be to lose hours of work. We want to prevent that from happening, so could you write us via the in-app feedback chat so we can take a closer look at this as soon as possible? Thanks!

Wow! First your response time to any issue is reliable and fast. I had some questions on an older version and you helped resolve them. BTW— the problem was me. Sincere thanks for not making me feel “non-savvy.” I am totally impressed with your product and every update make a useful product better! My husband watches me use it and now he wants to use it for his work as a physicist. It is convenient for research documents as well as I gotta run and don’t have time to read this article. There a tons of reasons to use this app that maybe I wouldn’t use, but could. Totally happy and impressed.

Thank you so much for this amazing review! PDF Viewer is an app for everyone, from teachers, to students, to construction workers etc. We are very glad that your experience with our support team was pleasant and it's also really great to hear that your husband is thinking about using it for his work. I hope we can keep you satisfied with our future updates!
