What's New in Version 2.2

For the last six months we’ve been locked in our lab, applying science to iPads to see what happened. As a result we’ve been able to optimize Procreate to take advantage of the phenomenal power of the iPad Air 2, integrate the flexibility of iOS 8, and finish something we’ve been working on for a long time - Palm Support.

Palm Support is like palm rejection, but better. It’s always on and you can use a regular capacitive stylus or even your finger. You can finally use gestures in tandem with resting your palm on the surface of the iPad screen without the worry of drawing over your canvas. Palm Support is completely transparent and will not interrupt performance or your workflow.

iCloud Drive, AirDrop and AirPrint are now accessible from Procreate through the new iOS 8 Sharing. You can now export to and import from iCloud Drive, as well as any other storage service that provides an iOS 8 extension.

iPad Air 2 runs Procreate brilliantly, and users with an iPad Air 2 will see increased layer caps across all canvas sizes.

Additionally we’ve done a bunch of other things. Here’s some of them:

- Rebuilt some major parts of Procreate to improve stability and memory usage
- Updated all stylus SDKs
- Added eyedropper as a stylus button option
- Added Merge Down to layer options menu
- Improved Palette Library interface
- Improved Brush Settings interface
- Interface tweaks throughout Procreate
- Bug fixes

Makes My Life Easier

I’ve been using Procreate for a year now and it has been very liberating eliminating my need to carry around sketch pads and pencil boxes. I also use it to color in my comics and other drawings, much easier than being tethered to a laptop.

A lot of people keep asking for new features but keep in mind what makes this a great app is that it runs smoothly. Adding more and more features can ruin a great app as bugs and bloating creep in.

That was evident in the latest version (2.2) which introduced palm detection. Unfortunately, that addition came with problems like messing-up many of the other gestures. It use to be zooming and rotating with gestures worked flawlessly. With palm detection itI can take 10 attempts to rotate or zoom without writing on your work. I thought my iPad was broken at first!

Fortunately, their support let me know you can disable palm detection in the iPad’s settings. YEA!

Setting a reference layer and changing colors got buggy too.

There are of course a few features I would like see also well but I can live without them. They include resizing a canvas (at least reducing one) and linking layers together to so you can move/alter them together without combining them.

But all in all this app beats even competitors from bigger companies especially for the price.

I use on an an iPad Mini 2 with 128GB running the latest iOS 8.

Great until the 2.2 update but now unreliable

This was, hands down, the best painting app on any mobile platform. I think they wrecked a good thing with 2.2.

The new feature “Palm Support” doesn’t really work that well and can’t be turned off (only the radius of palm detection.) This affects other gestures so two-finger canvas rotation isn’t as seamless as it once was.

There are also some really big glitches like layer opacity being set to “zero” on exit and return, and color selection doesn’t always take. You pick a color from a swatch or the color wheel and return to the canvas and it’s still what you had before. There’s also a problem of the stroke you just laid down disappearing, which was always happening a little (especially if you accidentally touch the screen with another finger or your palm) but with "Palm Support" it happens much more frequently.

All in all this app was a dream, nearly perfect except some minor problems exporting and importing brushes and files. Now it’s not nearly as reliable and I’m using it far less because it’s not worth the struggle. The next update could bring it back to its former glory but they really need to make it so Palm Support can be completely disabled. Until then I would advise anyone still running 2.1 to stick with it, or at least make sure you have a backup before you update in case you run into these significant problems as well.

Adobe HAS to be trying to acquire this!!

EDIT: Guys there IS layer opacity and very simple fill tools! Please skim the manual before you post to the world that it doesn't have options that it has! We're trying to tell you - for an 'app', this program is quite amazing!

Hands down the BEST graphic program I've found for iOS, haven't used any of the others since beginning with Procreate a couple years ago. Excellent support and community also, the devs have corresponded with me personally within hours to minutes at times, and changes to the program seem to get made to support the community's consensus. Get it now before Adobe buys them out! :) Super job, developers - you've rewritten what a normal iPad/tablet can accomplish. So, so powerful, I'm amazed that I'm not on my desktop (or a $5000 graphics tablet) every few hours, honestly.
