Description

Nominated for the best iOS accessible app in 2017 on AppleVis.

Fully featured text to speech app. The first app ever to feature the interactive web on the go. Users can interact with web sites and RSS feeds and pick articles to be read aloud by using headphone or Bluetooth hands-free buttons.

appPicker: "... is a game-changer, and is slowly transforming my life..."

Functions of those audio buttons can be customized which results in high productivity and accessibility. The app is tested to be accessible with VoiceOver by legally blind users. It can be used as an assistive technology and helper for people with visual impairments and disabilities like dyslexia (dyslexia friendly font is included in the app). Bookshare, an accessible online library is integrated into the app.

Add a web article to be read aloud from any app that can share a web site link (including any web browser) – just press the Share button in it and starting the speech or saving the text to be read aloud later is only a tap away.

Sync the web articles list across devices using Pocket and use it to add new articles.

The app is not just a voice reader of the internet content, you can import various text file formats to be read aloud - supported document types are: PDF (including scanned documents), Microsoft Word (.docx), Microsoft PowerPoint (.pptx), OpenOffice/LibreOffice (.odt, .odp), .html, .txt, .rtf, supported ebook formats are .epub, DAISY and .fb2 and emails in .eml format. All those formats will work only if a document has no DRM. Project Gutenberg, a free online library is integrated.

By moving your reading activities to commuting, walking, running, doing the housework or another activity you can save an hour each day. You'll also save eyes for better things while having your battery and data plan last significantly longer. Keeping the screen off grants that you won't get into the internet addiction and waste your time on unwanted things, and thus it can also help to people with ADHD. As a bonus, even if your internet connection is unstable you won't notice any interruptions.

By using the app you'll build your knowledge base in an easy way. Each read text is automatically moved to the Old Articles which supports powerful search and filtering features and keeps it available offline. Annotation tools are there to mark a text as favorite, bookmark an important paragraph in it or add a comment.

Latest iOS features including Siri Shortcuts, the latest visual style, drag and drop, 3D Touch, Spotlight Search, Dynamic Type are fully supported. The app can be used with any of 27 languages that have text-to-speech support on iOS, and all major languages are supported for the full automatic recognition.

The free version has a daily limitation in the number of articles that you can add to it which is removed by purchasing the Pro add-on. Some features are available only on iOS 11 and above.

Get the app now and enjoy the most convenient text to audio!

I love this

I struggle with reading because of adhd and possible dyslexia. school is difficult because I have to re-read a page at least 5 times before I understand it. I was doing a review over an article in forensic science and could not read the article for the life of me. I was getting frustrated and thought “I wish there was an app that would read it out loud to me” sure enough I went to the App Store, typed in ‘speech reader’ and found this. I immediately downloaded it and used it for the article I was trying to read. It read to me and a huge wave of relief came over me I wanted to cry. Reading is so hard for me and this app just basically saved my life for college lol. Thank you for creating this app, I appreciate it. The only down side is that I wish there were more voice options because the robotic voice gets a little annoying but I’ll take it!

Hi, your review is really touching, I am so glad to hear that the app can help someone in such way, thanks so much for sharing it! Considering the voice, you can install additional voices in the iOS Settings app. If you need more info read this link: http://labsii.com/ios-help/#voices or just reply to the email that you will get with this comment.

Poorly with Apostrophes & Voice Selection

I paid for the $5 version hoping to have more flexibility with the functions for the voices and to clear up the issue with pronouncing words with Apostrophes.

I mainly use the app to speak pdf cases. It reads the footers, superscripts, page numbers etc. It doesn’t recognize page separations and will read the text of the downloaded information mid sentence. Which is distracting to listening to the content. I have my phone set to Siri Female and it doesn’t use it. Would love to use Ava Enhanced even. It “computerized” voice is not soft to the ear.

Overall not what I was expecting.

Update: You are very defensive in your responses. I do not need tech support. I am aware of all of your responses. I’ve changed the voices to various voices (including Alex) and they’re all robotic in nature. As described by other reviewers. I updated the rating because it does work a lot better in the car reading through the media center. I do not experience the same problems as listening directly from my phone. So these issues may be isolate to mobile use. If this app is unable to read documents or pdfs without reach the page numbers or footnotes etc then that’s a design issue. The app has the potential to be a huge revenue generating product. Especially if it is able to save students time.

Hello, this is not a proper way to ask for a support that can answer most of your questions, but I'll try to address them. First you can't use Siri Female as Apple reserves it only for Apple apps. Second, you can use any other enhanced voice but there are two system settings regarding that, and you have probably set the wrong one. Third the problem with apostrophes is as the iOS 12 system level and it affects all apps with all system voices except for the Alex voice. The latest version of Speech Central is the ONLY app that has the resolution for this problem, but it is fairly fresh so it is possible you haven't noticed. Finally, pdf file format is designed with the goal of acurate printing of the page. It has no markup for reading, so text in footer is not marked in any way differently than any other text. The app does find the page numbers and repetitive text that appears in most novels and it works fairly well in removing them. As the pdf doesn't have any markup for the separations that you mention, there is no way to identify them without some highly capable artificial intelligence that I am not aware that any app has.

Fantastic app, small issue

-edit- If your iOS system language is set to en-US, but you have a different English regional language set as your system default language the app defaults to the default *system* language that your iOS device is set to.

As I mentioned in my original review, swiping the "More" tab to change the regional English dialect only affects the headlines.

I can't find a "Help" section anywhere in the Extras tab. I'd be happy to contact support if you can provide the email (I have Apple mail disabled so the "Contact Support" button in the Extras tab doesn't work).

Original Review:

While the app is great overall, it is unable to play articles using a British Voice (Serena) if your system region language is English US. This is true for both the free and pro version. It seems that it might be possible (if you change the publication to read in an en-GB voice, it reads the headlines with the British voice), but the articles themselves always default to the Female American English Apple voice (even when your system voice is set to use Serena).

The only way to make it work is by changing your system language to English UK.

I should note that this is not an issue on the macOS version.

Developer Response ,

Update: according to your description you need to install some enhanced quality voice for en-GB on your iPhone and then follow those recommendations. The app will always prefer to use the enhanced quality voice. You may contact the support on office@labsii.com

Original answer:
The app can do that, there are multiple ways to do that. You can check the help in the Extras tab on how to set the default voice. Also on the left swipe you can tap 'More' and set the language. As this will indicate that you prefer UK over US in that case it will be reflected on all items. I believe that it is expected that the app automatically works according to user system preferences and that setting something different requires additional work. If you need some more help contact the support. Please update your review to reflect those facts, thanks.
