Thank you for all your feedback.
I love being able to pay with my phone app! That's a huge bonus.
Making the mobile order, however, is pretty much impossible. I think I have used it successfully twice in five months. And those two times it took me about 20 minutes to make it all the way through to the completed order. The problem here is that the pages take forever to load (I have unlimited cellular and excellent Wi-Fi, so it's not me). The way the menu is organized for drinks and for food is not intuitive to a regular Starbucks user.
My other big complaint is that connectivity is very weird the closer I get to my local Starbucks. There is some network error that occurs which prevents me from being able to open the app. I end up walking around outside on the sidewalk waiting for it to show up on my lock screen. Then I have to open it and run up to the counter where they're waiting for me to pay so I can hold it in front of the scanner. Not very bloody efficient! I love my local Starbucks and I love my local Starbucks staff. They rock! This connectivity error also makes it impossible for me to leave a tip for them on the app. And that is doing them a huge disservice.
NEEDS REAL-TIME INVENTORY.
Starbucks needs to figure out a way to tie the app into store's real-time inventory. It would seem like this should be pretty easy to do as most inventory and sales operations are now electronic but for some reason, Starbucks hasn't figured this out yet. The alternative, is that I place an order thru the app and I get to a store expecting my drink to be ready and they havent' even started on it because they don't have something. And for some stores, they're out of stuff for WEEKS at a time so this happens repeatedly. Secondly, the Starbucks app needs an "I'm here" function like what Chick-fil-A did. Several times, I've placed mobile orders while in the store (it's a way to beat the line a little) and it's assumed the person's not there when using the app. This should be changed and there should be a way to let the baristas know you're there thru the mobile app. And lastly, instead of asking about a tip, there should be a popup asking about the customer experience. Nothing too extravagant, once again just like the Chick-fil-A app - rate this experience on a scale of 1-5 stars with a box to leave verbatim comments about the experience.
Mobile orders are hit or miss
The mobile ordering system is flaky. This morning I ordered the same thing I order every day from the same store I order it from every day and the order never showed up at the store. The baristas are trained to say don't worry it's in process and they never actually really check. So it took 25 minutes for me to show them my phone go through the line multiple times and them to figure out that my mobile order never actually arrived in their system. It's not worth the couple of minutes you might save with a mobile order to risk screwing your day up with a 25 minute delay first thing in the morning. I also live in Boston and like a previous reviewer have had problems where the app defaults to a random store that isn't even the closest one, so I've mobile ordered from the wrong store too, but this time it was the right store, just never showed up in their system. It's just unreliable. And there is no bug reporting or developer feedback in the app, so leaving a review is the only way they would even know something is broken.
