The ONLY Game I Keep Replaying Month After Month
UPDATE March 2014: I bought this game on my original iPhone. Yes, the "v1" iPhone! I am STILL playing this as my go-to, quick and always dependable game. Everything I said below in the original review still holds. Plus YEARS of playing it speaks to just how right they got it. Can't say it better than that.
I've had this since the original incarnation; I can't give the exact date, but it feels like more than a year, and I just keep coming back to it again and again. Yes, I've gotten to know the AI well, but it's still not an automatic win for me. But this is one of the few games that you can play in bursts - most games require your complete attention until you get to the end of the game, or a level, or something that takes a while. This game can be played for as little as a single turn. Things are always a little different, the luck of the roll changes things mightily, and each game plays just a little bit differently.
I've got 20 or more other games, and most are played for a while, and then they just sit. Strategery is the ONLY one I keep coming back to month after month, and I expect, still, year after year. WONDERFUL.
OK if you like Risk-style combat board games
Plays like Risk, with a view variations on the rules selected upfront, like size of board, winner take all, etc. - and a nicely executed random map generator.
The game is simple and polished, and plays quickly.
But I found it boring after a day when playing against the computer. The initial layout plus luck of the die roll in the first few moves typically determines the winner, and the strategy in computer play isn't all that complicated. The odds of a bad die roll are greater than making a fundamental mistake once you get the hang of it.
While I haven't played PvP, I don't see the outcome being that different or more satisfying (other than having someoneto verbaize bragging rights to) - although in PvP humans have the ability of trailing players to gang up on the army/region leader, which the computer AI will not do properly.
So, simple, well executed - but not enduring in appeal. I tend to prefer game mechanics that are simpler vs. complicated needlessly in battle board games - but Strategery shows that you can push that too far.
No more urinal stage fright!
This game is pretty fun and addicting. But the most important thing is that it cured my stage fright at the urinal. I’ve never been able to go to the bathroom when there is someone else at a urinal next to me. Even worse if there’s a line of people waiting behind me. So how did this solve my problem? Whenever I went to the bathroom at work I’d find myself playing a quick game of this on my phone while walking down the long hall to the bathroom. I’d get in there and be halfway through a game so I’d keep playing with one hand. Essentially, it trained me to make going to the bathroom something that just happened while I was focusing on doing something else. So, if you have stage fright problems at the urinal, give this game a whiz. Pun intended. (And I’m 100% serious that this happened. And it was unintentional, but it still happened!)
