Practice Japanese with anime conversations.
=[ HOW IT WORKS ]=
- Listen to a conversation: a list of phrases.
- After each repeat, any phrase has been seen enough will be replaced by a new phrase to learn.
- Best used as an intermediate practice tool.
- Combine with SCRIBE ORIGINS series to learn basic vocab and kanji.
=[ FEATURES ]=
- Practice listening skills for the Asia traveller
- Familiarise yourself with common everyday situations, so you're aware of useful phrases
- JLPT 4 + JLPT 3 intermediate word level, for those who want more practice tools
- Your progress for each phrase is tracked in the background, so you don't repeat phrases too frequently.
- Phrases are randomised in semi-artificial conversations, so there is some "variety" to keep your mind awake.
- Focus on listening, and translation recall. The two most important skills for everyday socialising.
StudyChat Japanese is designed for you as the intermediate-level traveller who wants to become familiar with phrases from different situations. If you already know the basics of the language and you want another tool to practice with, then this is for you.
StudyChat Japanese has been intentionally designed as a fun supplementation to existing study methods. There are many excellent resources for learning grammar and vocabulary. But there are few tools, aside from watching TV with subtitles, that simulate conversations for practicing what you have already learnt.
StudyChat Japanese also includes a bucketload of background and character styles, to keep your mind as interested as "study" possibly can be.

What's New in Version 3.5
Minor bug fixes.
Not worth it
Tried to make it through the first lesson on tenses and just couldn't do it. As an earlier review mentioned, there really aren't multiple choices to choose from, so the quiz like format is a bit pointless. My bigger problems are with the content. There are mistakes in some of the write ups, at least in the romaji - ie. the English representation of the Japanese pronunciation. The male speaker is a non-native speaker, his accent & pronunciation are pretty grating. There are even some rather blatant mistakes in the Japanese itself, mixing grammar typically used by women in the sad attempt at a masculine delivery by the guy.
Case in point: ne, ore wa ikanakucha = ね、俺は行かなくちゃ = Hey, as for me, I really gotta go. Starting the sentence with "ne" is sort of feminine. Using "ore" to describe oneself is actually rude and may get you in trouble with a lot of people. The verb "ikanakucha", is the imperative form of the verb "to go"; in other words "gotta go" or "should go" - but this verb form is also typically used by females. Trying to talk tough using a mix of female grammar and rudeness just doesn't come off that well. If you were going to say it for real it would look more like "oi, ore wa ikanakutewa" おい、俺は行かなくては。At least then it'd be consistent, but I'd recommend using "boku" over "ore".
Easy to learn in a totally fun way
I'm a beginner so I'm not sure how linguistics types will feel but I enjoy the breakdowns and content of this app. I have used the Rosetta Stone program and find this simple to use app a great compliment to it. There are some obscure conversations that keep it lively and fun and core elements to the language as well. Overall, I consider it a very solid app to be used in conjunction with more thorough practice and application.
If you want multiple options
Then you just have to change it in the settings. The bad reviews are from people who didn't utilize the settings feature. It's a really funny dialogue and very natural-seeming. I have never been to Japan, but I feel like this app would almost be like visiting without the expensive flight. Lol.
