Now everyone can play back their memories of FINAL FANTASY in an endlessly expansive app: THEATRHYTHM FINAL FANTASY!
THEATRHYTHM FINAL FANTASY, the first music game in the FINAL FANTASY series, has been augmented with more songs and new playable characters to make it easier to dive into and play than ever before! Now it makes its debut as an iOS app that allows for communication with users from around the world in an unlimited adventure!
■With Quest Medleys, every time that you play, it’s a new adventure! New enjoyment to be found in each game!
The iOS version of THEATRHYTHM FINAL FANTASY adds the Quest Medley mode, where you can play through songs you’ve purchased in a rhythmical gauntlet! Each quest is a set made up of a single FMS and a single BMS, and each time that you play, you will find yourself facing different songs, different levels of difficulties, and different rewards for completion—enjoy the thrill of a music game where the sense of adventure never fades! Being able to play on your iOS device by touching anywhere on the screen gives you more freedom as a player, as you operate the game with ease.
Music Stages in the iOS Version
・FMS (Field Music Stage)
Slide across the screen in undulating waves that rise and fall in time to the slower-paced songs in these stages.
・BMS (Battle Music Stage)
Flick and tap to the furious beat to hit the Triggers flowing before each character in these fast-paced songs.
■Leveling up your character hinges on clearing tough songs! What else could you expect from a FINAL FANTASY music game?
Each time that you play through a song, your characters will gain experience. This app makes it easier than ever to enjoy developing your characters, as you simply level them up and the abilities gained by doing so are automatically equipped to your characters to be triggered during the music stages. In addition to the three regular scores of differing levels—the Basic, Expert, and Ultimate scores—you’ll gain a further three Illusive Scores for each song: arrangements of the regular scores with similarly varying levels of difficulty. Collect the shards of these Illusive Scores by clearing Quest Medleys and open up new adventures. Whether you are a novice or an experienced veteran, you’ll be able to find a way to play that fits your level!
■Use Twitter to tell the world about the scores you create yourself and share them with players everywhere!
Players themselves can create their own original scores by trying their hand at the Compose Scores mode! Upload your scores onto the server, or download the scores made by other players around the world—it is the players themselves who make the challenges of this game beyond limit. When you link the app up to your Twitter account, you can Tweet not only about the results of your play but also announce the uploading of your original scores to the server. And who knows—you might even find some scores made by the developers and the creators among the original scores uploaded each day!
This game is great except...
I love this game. I like being able to interact with my favorite songs and characters in a way that I'd expect a Final Fantasy music game to be like. I really don't mind the micro transactions because there's only a handful of songs that I want and I think they're worth the buy considering you get a song and a 3d rendered background to match the setting of that song. I don't know how this game is compared to the 3ds version, but if you don't have a 3ds I think this app is a great option and the price for songs is reasonable considering you don't need to drop over $100 on a handheld console just to play this game. Plus, a previous reviewer did the math to determine the total price if you purchased everything. Yeah it seems like a lot if you buy everything at once, but I know I'm going to spread that over a couple of years. Why do people need a full game right now? Go get a 3ds instead of complaining about it here! My only issue with this app is the downloading. I usually have to try several times to download each song because errors occur from the server. Sometimes the error shows up 10 seconds in, sometimes 5 minutes. There is no progress bar to let you know if it's even working. I've been trying to download a bundle since yesterday and I keep getting errors. Other than that, great app, great game, and I hope more songs will be added in the future.
I want to love this port...
...but I can't. Now I'm not here to complain about the DLC pricing; you get a lot out of each 99¢. In the 3DS version, you get a Basic, Expert, and Ultimate stage for each song. In this port, you get those, plus three more unlockable Illusive stages and a literally endless supply of user-made content (custom content being the one feature that would have made the upcoming Curtain Call *perfect*). In addition, the Endless Quest is a great endurance mode that *could* go on forever—my favorite mode to play when I'm not focusing on any other goals.
But two things really hurt this app, and unfortunately only one of them is gameplay: the total lack of character customization, which gave the 3DS version so much of its charm. The other problem, and I'm not certain that it's not just me, but whenever I leave the app alone for a while and come back to it, it makes me redownload all the DLC I've purchased before I can play it again. EVERY. SINGLE. ONE. INDIVIDUALLY. Now, I've only purchased about a third of it, but this is terribly annoying and there's no reason for it. It makes me apprehensive about starting the app up because I can't figure out what triggers it. It's a terrible bug that destroys an otherwise good—almost great—game.
Great game, but not the same as 3DS version
Note regarding bugs: I have not encountered any crashing while running the game on an iPhone 5 and early-2012 iPad.
For those looking to buy this after having played or hearing about the 3DS version, please be aware that there are significant differences between the two. This version does not contain the "series mode" or "chaos shrine." It also does not (at the time of my writing this) contain song or video collections; it only has card collection.
The iOS version does, however, have a host of new things. It now has a quest mode, where you play a number of "quests" that function like dark notes and give rewards to unlock new sheets/scores for existing tracks as well as cards and bonuses. It also has a composition mode that allows you to create your own levels. Lastly, it has a ton of music and new playable characters that were not immediately (or at all) available in the 3DS version. Unfortunately, a lot of said songs and characters come at a premium ($). I would recommend buying from the FF games you enjoy the most to avoid racking up too many IAPs and keeping the price reasonable.
