If you work with files, Trickster is the ultimate productivity booster for you.

Quickly access to your recently used documents, folders, and applications.
All your important stuff is now just a couple of clicks away, accessible from your menu bar.

Did you just open a document in Pages? It’s in Trickster.
Did you just download a file? Don’t bother searching your downloads folder. Trickster has it one click away.
Did Dropbox sync files from another computer? It's in Trickster.
Everything you were supposed to be working on is a click away, ready when you are.

Some of the things Trickster can do:
- Drag and drop files from Trickster to Finder or any other application like you'd do from Finder.
- Open files and applications from Trickster, preview them or reveal in Finder.
- Includes Preset filters to only display images, audio files, videos, documents, applications, folders and specific locations.
- Create your custom filters based on location, file types, Finder tags (on OS X 10.9) or string matching.
- Track only relevant files and ignore all the rest.
- Favorites "sticky" bar gives you fast access to your most frequently used files, folders, and applications. Drop files on a 'favorite' folder to move it there or drop on a 'favorite' application to open it with that particular app.
- Add files to any notebook on Evernote

Trickster is 100% keyboard-friendly. For ultimate productivity and speed, you can use it entirely without a mouse or combine mouse with keyboard shortcuts and hotkeys.

What's New

Version 2.7

- Trickster's window can now be dragged by the top or bottom bar to detach it from the icon in the menu bar. It can then be reattached by bringing the window close to the icon. Very useful to reduce the amount of dragging you need to do on large monitors.
- Monitoring can now be paused to save CPU resource during file-intensive operations or when running operations that create a lot of files that you don't want to see in Trickster. Trickster can be paused from its main menu (bottom-right button) or using Mac's Defaults mechanism (see User Manual for details on that).
- Cosmetic fixes and improvements

Unorganized Guy’s Best Friend

I tend to save things in places that I don’t quite remembe where it was. And even when I do know where it is, it take many clicks to get to that folder. Trickster has made my life much easier as I know to go here right away. Being able to omit certain folders makes it better than the “all my files” view in the OS finder. Highly recommend.

Trickster is a time saver and the support is excellent

Cave Hoek

Trickster stays out of your way as a small icon in your menu bar until you need it. And then it is a life saver for accessing the recent history of applications you have run and the documents that you have modified. I also love how it knows about your Dropbox folder. Trickster really comes in handy if you find yourself opening the same document sequentially in two separate applications.

I had an issue where I added my own excluded path in the file tracking settings, and then Trickster wouldn't actually use it to filter anything. I posted a bug report on the ApparentSoft Trickster support forum and their friendly developers responded promptly and professionally. We discussed my issue and they soon provided a download for a new beta version with a fix. I'm now using and have not had problems since.

Picks up most, not all, files

I would give this 5 stars if it were free, but for $10 I need some improvements. I use Trickster mostly to find recent files. I work in a variety of programs and often need to share/attach files, but there’s no equivalent to the Windows ‘Recent Places’ folder on Mac. Queue Trickster…

It’s fast, pervasive in my menu bar, and I can drag files directly from it into emails or wherever. Huzzah, problem solved!

The problems are: 1) Doesn’t “see” downloaded files, only files I edit. 2) Click & drag highlights multiple entries. To drag, I have to click once then click again & drag, risking an accidental double-click. 3) It searches its own indexes, not my entire computer. Way faster to use Alfred or even Spotlight for general file search. 4) Not aggressive enough with default filters. Trickster, figure out my download and document folders - don’t make me have to manually choose a bunch of folders.

Developer Response

Hello Omri,
Regarding 1): It should see downloaded files if you add the Downloads folder to Watched List. 2) To initiate drag on the first click, drag sideways instead of down. Dragging down is for selecting multiple entries 3) Right, because Trickster doesn't search per se, it tracks recent changes. It's not a replacement for general search on Spotlight or Alfred 4) While we can figure out your default folders (in fact this is what Trickster 2.0 did), we must now make the users go through the folder selection process because of macOS Sandboxing requirements, which block access to arbitrary folders unless the user specifically gave permissions (by dragging into Trickster or through the Open dialog). So it's an unfortunately required limitation.
