Northern Ireland is not included. The Isle of Man is included only at road-atlas scales.
Since 2010, Britain's national mapping agency Ordnance Survey has released a large amount of free map data. UK Map makes much of that data available in a single app. It includes 1:1M MiniScale® and 1:250k road maps, which are built into the app, and 1:25k district maps and 1:10k street maps for the entire country which you can download in 5km by 5km tiles. Unlike other Ordnance Survey apps, these downloads are entirely free of charge - the only cost is the initial purchase of the app. Once you've downloaded the detailed maps that you need, an internet connection is not required.
Note that Ordnance Survey have not released any of their Landranger® or Explorer® map data as part of this free scheme, so those maps are not included in the app. However the app's 1:25k maps are suitable for countryside use; they are comparable to Landranger, since they don't show field boundaries and a few other details. They do show water features and woodland, contour lines and hill shading, and most footpaths.
Because the footpaths are derived from volunteer-collected data from OpenStreetMap.org, rather than Ordnance Survey, the coverage is not yet as complete as the other map data.
The app can load GPX files (for example, from websites, other apps and from nearby devices via AirDrop) and display waypoints, tracks and routes. You can also mark waypoints and record tracks within the app, and export them.
You can view graphs of altitude or speed along recorded tracks and imported routes.
The app has a 3D mode that lets you view the terrain from any viewpoint, useful for visualising hills and mountains.
The app also includes a searchable gazetteer containing over 250,000 place names, 850,000 street names and 1.6 million post codes. All of this data is built in to the app, so this search also works when there is no network connection.
The app also supports the compass and GPS - on those devices that have them - to display your position, orientation and altitude.

OS Open Map Local is now available as an alternative 1:10,000 map. Compared to the older OS Street View maps, these should be more up-to-date but they name fewer significant buildings. You can choose which to download, and if you download both a new settings switch determines which is displayed.
Ratings and Reviews
I recently cycled from Land's End to John O' Groats. I took along paper maps, but this app was indispensable on the few occasions where I was doubtful about my location or just wanted to know how far up a hill I had come. It was especially useful in larger towns where it's easy to make navigation errors. Being able to download maps in advance of the trip, and turn off my phone's data connection (with the GPS still active) saved me huge data roaming charges, and gave me instant access to the maps when I needed them. I didn't have the app open all the time, but when I needed it, it worked, and it was fast. I had another app with me for "offline" GPS use, and it also worked well, but this was my go-to option. It's a pity the 1:50,000 scale maps Ordnance Survey maps aren't available (due to licensing differences) as they would provide interesting detail, but this app is nonetheless great value.
I like the U.S. but travel to the U.K. from time to time and have always liked the maps there. Navigation in England is much more a challenge than in the midwest U.S. Anyway, this is one of the first apps I bought on my iPad 3G and it has been excellent! There were some tech issues leading up to the UK iPad release but the developer was very responsive and got them fixed.
What I adore about this app is that there is no delay while maps download. The built-in Maps on the iPad is really good, but it does rely on an active data link for the images. UK Maps has them all on the local machine, and you can download and store additional street-level detail for selected areas. I am working out a five week trip for my daughter this summer and this mapping is very useful for that.
I would also note that last year I was over and had a Garmin GPS unit with me. This worked very well in getting me right to my next destination but at the cost of losing perspective about what was around me as I went, as I hadn't pored over maps picking the routes ahead of time. This UK Maps app would restore that perspective, it's a pity the iPad wasn't out last year!
Although not by this developer, the Mini A-Z Map of London is also a good implementation of a machine-resident map. Like the UK Maps, it will show you your position using the 3G's GPS when it can see the satellites.
This app was exactly what my family needed during our last visit to England. We drove from
London to York and never got lost once, thanks to this app and the rental cars gps (which occasionally malfunctioned). I don't visit the UK very often, but I am so glad I bought this app. I wish very much that there could be an offline US road map app even half as good as this app. Even just the East coast. Even just the North East. Please? You can spend hours lost in Boston or NYC when you can see the road you want to get to but can't figure out the right line of one way streets to go down to get to it. There is a market in the US for this type of map app. Please fill it. :)
