What's New in Version 1.9.5
Performance Enhancements and Bug Fixes
Performance getting better all the time, but could use some features
This app keeps improving all the time. Stability is much better than it ever has been. Selection of games is awesome; I can get just about any college football game I care to see. (I would love to see more international sports, too, though: more cricket, rugby.)
Even with vast improvement, there are a couple of features that are desperately needed. First, you've got to add a way to save your place. Not so hard for most US sports, but for cricket especially it's a real pain to have to fast forward through eight hours of a game (especially on AppleTV where it can take ten minutes just to fast forward back to your place!).
Second, you need a fwd skip button, too. Sure, I get that you don't want people to fast forward through the commercials, but there are plenty of times where you don't want to wait for a time out when they're icing the kicker or for an injury. And I swear I will watch sports center without having to stare at those same six slides of your anchors over and over and over and over and... Please, just a 30 sec skip button!
There are a large number of media players for all sorts of video content, but this is the only player that provides access to ESPN content. For that reason alone, it gets 3 stars. Outside of providing ESPN content, it does nothing exceptionally well, and it has a few significant drawbacks. For example, you can't click off the app (to reply to a text, for example) and then return and pick up where you left off. Once you switch apps, you have to restart whatever you were watching on this app. If you pause the app and the phone goes to sleep, the app is unable to resume playback when you wake the phone. Occasionally I can just restart the content and fast forward to where I left off (assuming I remembered to keep track of exactly where I was in the program). Other times, I have to force close and relaunch the app before video playback would work.
Take away the bugs and this is a perfectly fine video content app. As it stands, the only reason to use this app AT ALL is for access to ESPN content. Too bad that also means you have to suffer through the very annoying and very fixable issues.
Annoying glitches but great content
As nearly everyone else has stated, it's really annoying to have to restart a video or the whole app every time my phone goes to sleep or I leave the app for any reason.
Another huge issue is the scrubbing. It's so clunky, there is no fine scrubbing. I watched nearly all of a soccer match at home on tv then later went to finish it on the ESPN app (did not know outcome). As hard as I tried to FF to the correct place in the video, it went 8 minutes too far and I saw another goal had been scored. Whoops. Well no point in watching, I just saw how it ended. It's also a hassle to rewind a few seconds back and then FF to where I originally was in the video. The 30 second backwards skip always takes me too far back. Then it's impossible to FF to where I was previously with any precision. I would really love to have more fine-tuned scrubbing.
But I love the all the content. That is the saving grace of this app.
