Customer Reviews

great algorithm, decent interface

First the good: Love how aggressive the app is about trying to reroute around traffic areas and how creative it is about using small roads or alternate routes. Now the areas for improvement: overall the interface is laggy, sometimes your appearance on the map is not updated until you're already gone through an intersection. The warning to not use the app while driving is fairly worthless as anyone or just press the "I am a passenger "option. This is very annoying when you are the passenger and it basically seems this is just done for liability purposes on the developer end than to help the user at all. The frequency of alerts for driving directions and for other road hazards e.g. police, potholes etc is way too high and interrupt any other radio or Podcasts or Music you're trying to listen to. While there is an option to turn off the directions and keep listening to all the other little alerts about police or pulled over cars etc, there's no way to do it the other way around to have continued driving directions guidance but not hear about every car that is pulled over. it would be amazing if there was also an option to decrease or increase the amount of detail and frequency of alerts given about the driving directions e.g. if you want all alerts including hearing about an exit miles before or simply when you're there. Overall pretty great app with regards to the directions algorithm, just need some tweaks in the interface.

My favorite navigation app

I've used all of the major navigational apps and Waze is my favorite for several reasons, the biggest of which is it's ability to alert a driver about speed traps and - for me - the clarity of its visual cues when making turns. I highly recommend taking the time to turn off most of the default alerts, especially "road hazards", because the steady stream of notifications about what are mostly trivial items ("car pulled off to the shoulder ahead") can make your initial experience of the app distracting at least. It would be a shame to have an optional feature cost you the benefit of a great service and a great piece of software. Other positives: the occasional "guest voices" are entertaining, always clever, and sometimes laugh-out-loud funny; Waze has a great copywriter somewhere in its ranks. On the downside, menus in the app are sometimes counterintuitive and the Favorites (saved destinations) feature could use a serious overhaul. Why can't I edit the labels on my saved destinations?! - it's a baffling miss - and characteristic of a generally weak ergonomic approach. Having said that, the weakness in the navigation of internal app features is one that fades in relevance after using the app for a few hours. I highly recommend Waze. It's one of the handful of apps that I rely on every day and which makes my life both more efficient and more enjoyable. Five stars.

Love hate relationship

First off, there is a lot of good to the Waze app. I love that there is an amazing community involved in making better navigation. Knowing about road hazards and closures is vital to me considering how much construction is happening around me. Waze has routed me around accidents and gotten me to work on time on several occasions. That being said, I have some gripes about the app that if fixed could make it a 5 star app. First, I wish it could pull in information from state transit sites for short term road closures. I have encountered several recently where an on ramp or a section of freeway is closed for a few hours in the morning. These are planned and communicated through our state transit website. Second, I wish Waze wouldn't send me through residential neighborhoods or would have a setting to avoid doing this. It has sent me into neighborhoods where kids are playing in the street and I feel this is an unsafe practice. Third, I wish there would be a way to report stop signs. I have been routed down streets with several of them when the adjacent street does not. Finally, I live in an older city where the streets are narrow. Many places do not have a left turn lane. If the map editor would allow us to point these out, it would send us on easier and safer routes. It would also improve the overall traffic flow by keeping us from blocking a lane in order to make a left turn.
