Wide Email (typing shortcuts)
Open iTunes to buy and download apps.
!! IMPORTANT NOTE: The newest version of the iPhone OS — version 3.0 released June 17 — enables users to view and compose emails in landscape mode in the built-in Mail program. You no longer need Wide Email in order to write emails with the wider, landscape keyboard.
However, Wide Email still makes writing emails and tweets much faster and easier with its "typing shortcuts" feature, described below. And it automatically saves sent drafts to use as templates for writing new emails. These extra features are why Wide Email remains on sale for iPhone OS 3.0 users.
*** KEY FEATURE: TYPING SHORTCUTS
Quickly write whole words or phrases by typing only one or two letters. For example, when you type "cu", the phrase "see you later" is automatically inserted.
Similar to AutoType on the BlackBerry, AutoText in Microsoft Word, and typing macros in various desktop programs.
• Customize your shortcuts by adding, changing, or deleting a virtually unlimited number of shortcuts
• Use shortcuts to insert single words, sentences, or entire paragraphs
• Shortcuts can insert multiple lines. For example, "adr" could insert your whole 3-line mailing address. Enables shortcuts to insert multiple paragraphs.
*** TWITTER INTEGRATION
You can use Wide Email to post new tweets to your Twitter account through Twitterrific. Writing tweets is faster and easier using the landscape keyboard, which Twitterrific doesn't provide. You can also use all the typing shortcuts you've created!
(You must download and install Twitterrific on your iPhone or iPod touch for this to work. The basic version is free in the App Store.)
• Save drafts to finish later — great for writing long emails to friends
• Automatically saves copies of sent emails, just in case
• Automatically saves drafts if program is interrupted, e.g. by home key
• View more of your message at once while typing: subject line moved into top bar, and iPhone status bar hidden when in landscape mode.
• Drafts in the auto-saved, "sent drafts" list can now be deleted one at a time as well as all at once.
What's New in Version 3.2
** FIXED: Occasionally, typing a shortcut in an email or tweet would cause a quick vertical flicker of the text. This is now fixed.
** Now compatible with iPhone OS 3.0. However, this version of Wide Email will still run perfectly on iPhone OS 2.1 and above.
Best of breed, room for improvement
I bought all three landscape keyboard programs and tried each of them since the reviews weren't consistent or compelling. Wide Email was by far, best of breed with the most robust feature set, intuitive feel and consistent functionality. As an ex-Blackberry user, I am used to writing fully formed sentences of a professional nature very quickly ("CU L8R" doesn't cut it when communicating with executives and attorneys) . It's great to be able to do this again using my iPhone. I am using a non-jailbreaked, 16GB iPhone and have yet to see any crashes as noted by some reviewers. There is room for improvement - I cannot delete any of my older "Sent Drafts". Although the "Sent Drafts" feature is a great function to have when similar, if not identical, messages need to be sent out to friends, coworkers, family, etc., I would like the option to clean out the old stuff to make room for the new. Other than that small complaint, this is a great app. But don't take my word for it. At .99 per app, you can try all of them out yourself without breaking the bank. Most likely, you'll arrive at the same conclusion as I have.
Best of the landscape email apps
I couldn't decide which of the many landscape email apps to get, but this one edges out the others in many ways. First, it works well with saving your email if for some reason you get interrupted and go somewhere else on your iPhone. You just go back into the app and you don't have to start over. Second, the developer is extremely responsive, participating in forums (i.e. on macrumors) and regularly engaging users on feedback, future requests, etc. Overall a really great tool and for 99 cents you can't beat it!
Great feature available now
It was a tough decision with so many similar apps. However, note that this one includes a subject line. It is also good that the keyboard landscape changes with iPhone orientation as one would expect rather than statically remain horizontal. This one appears to do as much or more than the competition. (I haven't tinkered enough to 5 stars. This is natural evolution for the standard Mail application. Why not have the functionality now and let the author make a few bucks before Apple gets around to implementing this?)
