Description

The XScreenSaver application is a large collection of historic and educational graphics demos.

XScreenSaver is the standard screen saver collection shipped on most Linux and Unix systems. I released the first version in 1992. In 2006, I ported it to MacOS, and in 2012 I ported it to iOS.

This application is not a screen saver, of course, since iOS doesn't have those. But it does let you play with the hundreds of graphics demos that are a part of the XScreenSaver collection.

Wow this developer went into an insane amount of detail. Very cool/nostalgic!

Classic visualizations, now on iOS

Finally, an app that justifies buying an iPad.

Ok, so the truth is somewhat more mundane, but this is a great port of the XScreenSaver application from Linux to iOS. jwz put in a ridiculous amount of effort for this, and it comes through. There is the occasional glitch; load enough screensavers in a row and one will fail to load its framebuffer and you have to reboot the app to view that particular screensaver. But all in all, if you want to show off your shiny new iOS device, there's nothing better than displaying graphics written for radically different hardware fifteen years ago.
