Hands down my favorite App...a MUST HAVE for foodies of any level.
If you like food and like eating out and trying new places then you MUST download this app. I love my apps and use my iPhone heavily but I can say with absolute certainty that I love an use Yelp more than all my other apps combined (excluding Pandora..my very close second favorite app). Get the inside scoop on any restaurant, bar. Get real reviews from real customers on what a makes a business good or bad. Hear what others think are the good, bad, wonderful, and must order items at each restaurant. Don't waste your time trying restaurants and wasting your hard earned money on less than pleasing food. As yelp has grown in popularity it now rates all sorts of businesses, cultural attractions, fun things to see/do, professional services, ect in your area.
Yelp app is perfect for on the go Yelping. Find restaurants an bars based on distance from where you are, a pre-entered address, street, or city. Sort by food type, dress code/atmosphere, cost per person, average ratings and more. Get driving or walking directions door to door. Check in at restaurants, bars, and various business near you. Draft full reviews or write a quick tip. Take photos on your iPhone an upload directly to Yelp while you are still AT the business or place. Find where your friends are or meet new ones.
I love Yelp and I LOVE the Yelp app for iPhone!
It used to be better
There's been a trend over the last several years to constantly refine, constantly update and constantly change, even if it's not necessary for the better. And often the baby and the bath water get thrown out together.
Although I still like Yelp, this version of the app isn't as good as past versions. Most notable is the layout: there's a big star prominently at the bottom that it wants you to use to check in, take a photo, or write a review (even if you haven't yet selected a business) as if it wants to be Facebook or Instagram. To which I say "You be you Yelp, you aren't Instagram." Why is it so hard to find my profile? Or my bookmarks? Instead, it has an "activity" button prominently featured for me to check messages. I'm sorry, but I'm not interested in using Yelp to send email.
Another thing I find annoying is that it only gives you top reviewer status if you use your real picture. I find it difficult to give a business a poor review (especially one I frequent often) if I have to put my face next to the review. I think this is a way for them to skew reviews towards five stars. I don't think it's helpful to have a bunch of overly positive top reviewers exposing their fluffy thoughts on here. I prefer the honest truth.
They remove or hide 1 star reviews at request of business owners
Regardless of what their claims might be, Yelp does indeed remove low ratings and poor reviews at the request of business owners and managers, most notably ones who advertise with them. One of the sleazy ways around admitting to this is placing a poor review into the reviews "not recommended by yelp" area, hoping you won't read them. They will throw an occasional 4 or 5 star review into the mix to make it look like it's all on the up and up, but it is not. After watching several local businesses in the area for some time it's almost comical to watch the negative review on them disappear in a short period of time, with yelp hiding behind the pretense of this process being "automated". Be careful when choosing a place to eat or shop when using yelp, you can easily get burned by false positive reviews and deleted or hidden truthful reviews. Always double check with sites like tripadvisor and other review sites, where they do not cater to businesses for their own personal gain. Any business who advertises with Yelp can have your negative reviews deleted immediately, no questions asked. These guys are bought and paid for by some of the shadiest business in the entire world. Not to be trusted.
