Reseña de álbum

Maria Alice is a Cape Verdean singer whose pure voice is powerfully sensual. This exceptional release is composed mainly of Cape Verdean dance rhythms with Brazilian tinges and a few soulful mornas. Backing her is a cadre of some of the best Cape Verdean musicians in the business. Combine her crystalline voice, the musicians, and the songwriting talents of Toi Vieira, Luis Lima, and Ramiro Mendes, and you have an enduring work that is destined to become a classic. "Crumuxa," a very danceable track, kicks off the album with a good dose of sultry Cape Verdean swing. "Falso Testemunho," a beautiful heartfelt ballad that also contains some fine guitar and percussion work, has been featured on compilations of music from Lusafrica. The soprano sax phrasing on "Sonha Na Bo," a track loaded with swing and sway, is expressive and fresh sounding. Upon repeated listening, one begins to appreciate the adept and sensitive musicianship that Maria Alice has, complementing her fine vocals on this album. This is swinging Cape Verdean music that leans toward the traditional without sounding dated in the least. Highly recommended.
