All except two pieces on Gifts of the Angels are taken from eight previous Steven Halpern releases. As the title suggests, the album highlights music with an angelic presence. Halpern writes that these pieces represent those "'magic moments' that occur at least once while recording each album...when the room fills with a luminous light...when time seems to stand still." Also appearing on the album are harpist Georgia Kelly, from the Ancient Echoes album, and Diana Allen on the vocals to a new piece, "Angels on High."

Steve Halpern is the original new age artist, in the most accurate sense of the term. In 1975 he released Spectrum Suite, his first album of music specifically designed for relaxation and healing. Before that, Halpern had been immersed in the New York City jazz scene as a trumpeter and guitarist. His disgust at the adverse effects of life in the fast lane were accentuated by a move to California, where he perfected his idea of "anti-frantic alternative" music.
