Garnett Silk started out as a teenaged toaster under the moniker Little Bimbo, but thanks to some advice from legendary Jamaican singing star and producer Derrick Morgan, he blossomed into an engaging and pure singer by the start of the 1990s. His first album, It's Growing, the only one released during his lifetime, established Silk as one of the best young Jamaican singers and signaled a shift (or reshift, given the way music constantly cycles and changes on the island) toward more roots material in the yards and dancehalls. Talented and charismatic, Silk was poised for international stardom when he died in a fire at his home in 1994. Legends features several tracks from the debut album, and shows that he hadn't lost his knack for toasting, either, as illustrated by the funky consciousness raps on "Silk Chant" and "Every Knee Shall Bow."
